Shell Stitch Info

solosmocker | Posted in General Sewing Info on

I am answering here a request for shell stitch info as seen on a child’s slip that I posted in the gallery board under Easter dress with Madeira Hem.

If the garment has 5/8 seam allowances I cut off 3/8 of the seam allowance. You can do the next step in one of two ways. Way #1, turn and press the edge to the wrong side for 1/8 inch. Turn and press again to the wrong side for 1/8 inch. Way #2, turn and press to the wrong side a hair over 1/8 inch and then top stitch with a 2.0 stitch.Next step for either way is to set up your machine for a blind hem stitch with a tension of 5, width of 3.0, length of 1.0. The part of the stitch that goes vertically will be on the fabric and the legs of the stitch will end over the fabric folded edge. You may need to mirror image the stitch if it doesn’t work comfortably for you. I always do. If the stitch does not pull in and make a little scallop, tighten your tension. This stitch really only works on lightweight fabrics like batiste or hanky linen or lingerie tricot. This is lovely on lingerie or on a child’s undies.

If not clear let me know. I have added a couple of pics but can’t tell yet if they will post.

Thank you so much for the instructions on shell stitch. I would like to make my DGD a little slip like that. They are just so cute. When I get home, I want to copy your instructions for future use. Thanks, again.Marcy
