Was reading about some very useful applications of clear elastic to replace neckline and armhole facings. But the last time I tried something like this, using clear elastic with a zigzag stitch, the many holes that the needle made on the clear elastic seemed to cause it to fail (break) very easily. That is why when reading about people that have serged it onto the necklines and then turning the seam and top stitch over this elestic again really baffles me, based on my sad experiences.
I must be doing something wrong, so I would appreciate the groups thoughts on this.

Did you give the elastic a good stretch before you stitched it down? (It needs one)
Did you have your stitch length set too short? (too many holes)
Did you expect it to hold more tension than it could? (stretched too far)

Well, it has been a while since I used it because of the very poor results, but I do recall stretching it out before using it. In regards to the density of stitches, I don't think I really looked at that aspect, so I'll look at that. What would be a good number on a serger? Expectation of stretch......when I have used it, in some cases it was for trying to do to much, but also for light stretch applications.
What about the impact of topstitching over a serged clear elastic edge......does this really work?

While I haven't serged it, I have sewn it into necklines that I have faced and topstitched. I haven't had a problem. It is great for preventing gaping necklines.
