restyling old jackets
I have several good jackets from the 80's and would like to restyle them to bring them up to date. Is there a source that can walk me through this?

I don't know of any (post #34771, reply #1 of 2)
I don't know of any particular resource for restyling your 80's jackets. You could do what I do. That is taking the entire garment apart and then recutting and resewing in a current style. This is a lot of work but when you factor in the cost of the fabric, already paid for, it is time well spent.
I did this with a few jackets (post #34771, reply #2 of 2)
I did this with a few jackets for a customer. The biggest part of the eighties look is the big shoulder pad. I took out the sleeve, removed the shoulder pads and tapered the shoulder seam down reducing the arm hole size and removing some of the width across the shoulders. The sleeve head will have to be reduced to fit back into the arm hole. And smaller shoulder pads will probably be necessary for support. This alone makes a huge difference and may be enough to make the garment usable now.
