Problem with invisible zipper on bias polyester satin dress

Janaki | Posted in General Sewing Info on

I have a zipper question: a colleague of mine made a halter top dress on bias from polyester satin material and had an invisible zipper in the back. The zipper looks ok on the hanger but once you wear it, it is wavy and the bottom end of the zipper is standing out and it is not at all acceptable.

Is there a way to make it lay flat, maybe interface it in the CB seam? Do you think it will work or is there any other solution? I need to have it done by this weekend (Aug 13th 2011) for a fashion show, so I’d appreciate any help you can give!

Thanks,
Janaki

    invisible zipper

Absolutely interface the s.a.  As for the bottom of the zipper poking out...remove the stitching in that are and using a regular zipper foot turn right sides together restitch the seam closed.  The regular zipper foot allows you yo sew past the zipper pull.

I had a similar thing happen on a bias dress.  I let the dress hang for a few days  - the weight of it will stretch it out a little.  Then with the dress still hanging on the dress form, I pinned the zipper in place.  Then I hand basted it and then sewed it by machine - and yes it was a an invisible zipper.  It worked perfectly.  By the way, bias dresses and skirts should be folded for storage and not hung - just because they will keep stretching.
