Needles for sewing buttonholes on lightweight SATIN

msewing1 | Posted in General Sewing Info on

I have just finished making a beautiful baby gown out of a lightweight satin fabric. Now I need to make the buttonholes. When I try to make them on my scraps, I get runs across the fabric. I am using a standard size 11 needle. Am I using the wrong needle? How can I make these button holes without the runs? Do I need a ballpoint needle?

I believe your needle must be dull or something with it pulling. Do you have interfacing in the area, if not add washable stabilizer (sulky)over and under to support the buttonhole, use a NEW smaller size needle. What about your thread--I'd be using Metrosene or Gutermann as both are much finer & would make a less bulky buttonhole. I actually found those threads sew much better than others on light wt. fabrics.
