As there are many many discussions on this site it can be quite frustrating if you can't find what you need when you need it.

Have you used the advanced search function? typing in the keywords, like tablecloth or linen or whatever the case is. This will do a full search on this site.

Hopefully you can narrow it down a bit.

I've found several books in the library on sewing with vintage fabrics.  They give detailed suggestions on how to maximize the ready-made details of your tablecloth, etc. I would check there in addition to this site.

Hi LKL!  Ralphetta's suggestion made me look in my book shelf.  There is a book called Sew Vintage that goes into pretty indepth detail about doing just what you're thinking of doing.  It's a Taunton book, too, so you should be able to find it on this website.  Good luck - post a picture when you're through?

Hi LKL - I think you'll like the book.  If you go to Amazon and look the book up you can look through a few pages of it.  They have some of the photos available.  It's a  good book - shows lot's of illustrations, etc.

        Good luck!

I though I saw this in Threads Magazine not too long ago, but then I have been looking at so many old TM that I am not sure which issue.

Try magazine index at the top of this page, it may help.

The best advice that I can give you when using antique textiles is to go to your nearest Horse Tackle supplier and pick up some "Orvis" soap. This is one of the only soaps available now which is completely acid free - very important when washing delicate antique fabrics. From there, always make a muslin when you are using an irreplaceable fabric, take careful note of the grainlines, and get creative. The easiest thing to make is a sun dress gathered at the waist with little straps. You can use one long eyelet or embroidered edge at the top of the bodice, and the opposite edge at the hem.

There is an article about this in Threads, issue 77.
