Necklines

jamibaker | Posted in General Sewing Info on

Hello,

Please tell me how to alter a neckline on my dresses, so that it sits right on my shoulders or even a lttle off the shoulders.

I know it is an easy adjustment, but I just can’t figure it out. I tried cutting below the neckline, but this made it sag both in the front and back of the dress. I tried to cut the shoulder seams and trim the existing neckline to meet it, but that didn’t work either. I’ve made a mess of 3 dresses already! Please help.

Thank you.

Without knowing exactly what the problem is, I would suggest you cut a bodice front and back out of scrap fabric and pin seams until you have something that lays the way you want it around your neck.  If it is a tight neckline, you may need to insert a zipper in the center back so you can get it over your head.   If you get it to lay smoothly over your shoulders and across the back and front, you should be able to cut any neckline you want.  I need extra width across my back so I need to put a dart at the shoulder line to put extra width there.  We all need to do tweaking on patterns.   Once you learn what you need to do you will probably want to do it on everything.
