Get a thumbtack and a piece of tape.

Decide how wide you want the circle; divide that width in half.  Measure the amount from your needle to a position on the bed of your machine.  Tape the thumbtack, pointed side up, at that location on the machine.

Hook the fabric onto the thumbtack, and stitch the arc or circle. It's important to hold the fabric so there are no folds between the tack and the needle.

After a couple of rounds of practice, you'll be a pro!
