Gypsy skirt

foxfyreut | Posted in General Sewing Info on

Am making an ankle length, :Gypsy-style” skirt with five tiers. There is a gathered waist. For moderate fullness, any suggestions on the proportion to add to each tier for gathering? 1.5x larger than the one above? 2x larger? more?

Pattern Review has posts on gathering - shirring.  if you've yet to join, basic mambership is free, you might have to do so to open this next.

One and a half will give you a nice proportion. I am not sure what you mean by " moderate", however! A good idea is to determine your "moderate" flare by starting at the bottom tier and working backwards. I am the kids of person who likes gypsy skirts to flare BIG, as in you grab the hem and easily hold it out sideways to shoulder height with some skirt left! You probably want something a bit more moderate.  I'd say bottom tier about 10-12 feet long. Figure out how much gathering you want on the top tier; About 1 1/2 x your hip size is good. Measure that tier, and stagger your remaining 3 tiers accordingly.
