Tips On Faux Fur Lining Coats PLS!!!

MikoStennis | Posted in General Sewing Info on

I have a new design for a winter coat with a faux fur lining.  Being that the fur is bulkier, what ease or grading amount should I use in adapting the lining pattern pieces?  I would greatly appreciate all comments and suggestions.  Thx 🙂

    Fur lining

Actually, you need to fit the lining first, and then grade the outer fabric from that; otherwise, the coat will be at least one or two sizes too small.

Ease charts are available on a lot of sites, but none of them will account for the thickness of fur.  Different furs have different thicknesses, too, so a mathematical equation won't help much.  But you can get a pretty good idea of the ease differential this way:

Take a length of the fur and wrap it around your middle with the fur facing inward, safety pinning it closed.  Using a tape measure, measure around the outside of the fur.  Take off the fur and measure around at the same spot.  The difference between the two measurements will be your "fur adjustment."  Add this "fur adjustment" to the standard ease recommended for coats to find the correct ease for the outer fabric pattern.  The lining pattern will be the same as the outer fabric pattern as the backing of the fur will have to match up with the inner side of the outer fabric.

Basically, you have to think about the fact that the outer fabric is not fitting over a body but over a fur-covered body, the outer layer is going to be much bigger than the normal.  Hope that makes sense!
