Hi! Carib Jewel is interested in learning more about getting into couture-level sewing. Anyone have some tips for her?

Buy Bobbi Carr's book for a start, and some of her couture videos. There never has been, nor will there likely ever be, a better couture seamstress than Bobbi.

Plan a trip to NYC and go to the F.I.T. museum and to the Met's Costume exhibit.  Nothing beats close up examination of the garments to inspire!

If she has a chance to take a class with Cynthia Guffee she will learn a lot of the basics as well.

Can I say "I do not like Bobbie Carr's book". I hope noone gets upset. But IMHO Claire Shaeffer's books are the Classics on Couture sewing. Claire's Couture Sewing and High Fashion Sewing Secrets are books sewers should have.

Also among my favourites are everything written by Susan Khalje. Her Bridal Couture and Linen and Cotton books are must haves.

Susan Khalje's books have good pertinent information on sewing to fit life in the Caribbean. People get really dressed up there very often. Lots of fancy dressing for church and school functions as well as concerts and theatre. The Linen and Cotton book of course is ideal sewing information for that climate.

I would also recommend the Fashion Design Course at the GARMEX HEART Foundation programme in Kingston, 72 Marcus Garvey Drive. They offer weekend courses over 10week periods or if time permits they run a fulltime 1 year course, and the Library there is to die for. Every book I mentioned here is available there. There is also a Fashion Design course run by the University of the West Indies, The Newspapers usually carry the Ads for such courses. Both are popular.

Hi Carol

That's so helpful and sweet!  I really appreciate it!  And everybody else too!
