botched up zipper insertion…

rekha | Posted in General Sewing Info on

I just finished making a pair of corduroy trousers and faithfully followed Sandra Betzina’s method of ‘mock fly insertion’. However, as long as I am standing I don’t see it but as soon as I sit down the zipper weeps out. Is there a way that I can save my face or rather my trousers by redoing that part of the trousers; I intend to use a stay tape and hair canvas. Any quick answers as I was hoping to wear it on my dad’s 83rd birthday in 3rd week of November.

Assuming you are willing to rip & start over... Rip out the zipper & resew it 1/8" over on the underlap side.  You probably have enough seam allowance to do that if you started with 5/8 " allowances.  Also, add an underlap flap (Can't think of terminology).  Take a 3" wide strip about 8" long (long enough to cover the zipper)  Fold in 1/2 and finish raw edges.  Stitch this onto the underside of the zipper allowance (look at a pair of RTW - it's pretty easy to see how it's done)  To secure it all together, I use two bar tacks (ala RTW construction) from the right side at the base & side of the stitching.  Then you can add an additional hook & Eye on the underside of the waistband, which will help keep the zipper from creeping.

Hope this makes some sense - looking at a basic pair of jeans has helped me tremendously!  Good luck.

The secret of Betzina's fabulous method only dawned on me when I read: place the zipper face down so that the edge of the zipper tape butts against the temporary seam in CF. My problems as ever, do first and read instructions later!!!
