The Best of Threads DVD

clairezbo | Posted in General Sewing Info on

Just wanted you girls to know, the Best of threads DVD, is wonderful. It has all the video tips that have been on line for the past few years. It has wonderful sections on designer hints, and many many more. There is a video on how to sew a zipper in pants. It will blow you away. The zippers come out beautifully, and so easy to follow the instructions. I have been sewing for 50 years, and You really can teach an old dog new tricks!!!!!!!

Where do you get the video? Does it have anything to do w/ the discussion threads? I'm fairly new and can't imagine what kind of video content it would have. A Brief description would be great!

It is a wonderful DVD, It has chapters on Mastering Techniques, expert methods, Designer embleshments, couture secrets, 50 bonus Tips, and videos, It is called "the best of threads". The videos have been on The http://www.threads site at one time or another, and they are very good. Most of the tips have been in the threads magazine. Another thing well worth the money!

Are there any instructions on fitting?

If yes, how different are they from the written and illustrated text in books

Yes, they do. But not on this Dvd. If you navagate back to this home page, and then put DVD in the search box, you will see what they have to offer on fitting. The whole series is a little expensive, but they have singles for less money. I have never see or used these. Most of my fitting advice has come from the Threads magazine.

rekha:  "Are there any instructions on fitting?"

Amber, the editor of Threads, talked about the fitting DVDs while they were shooting them back in the fall.  She was amazed at how much she was learning.  I think they are probably pretty good.  Maybe you could email her and ask her to send you a snippet before you purchase.  That way you could get a sense of how they work before buying one.

The Best of Threads is a great DVD.  Unlike some of the other forums here on Taunton Press, you can't pay a subscription fee to access old articles.  (You can do this for sure on Fine Homebuilding as I bought it for my husband who uses it all the time).  Instead they have put out this DVD.  I like it, even though I own almost all Thread issues myself.  It took me a few minutes to get the hang of navigating through it, but now I just pop it in my computer and zoom away.  I like being able to magnify or reduce sizes as I want.  The articles themselves are a great cross section of the issues and I think reflect the requests of readers in recent years.

I have not purchased any of the fitting DVDs yet myself.  Budget doesn't quite allow yet.  Hope this helps.  Scrubble4

I think that we are going to post some snippets on our Craft Stylish.com web site soon.

Re: Archived articles on Threads web site. We have some issues with securing rights to all stories---in those days contracts didn't include digital rights, because there was no digital medium. We're trying to figure out a solution and hopefully, eventually we will. In the meantime, we are producing a Best of Threads Vol. 2 in the fall. :-)

Amber:  Thanks for the two updates.  I do understand copyright issues and know they can be tricky in this transition to digital.

Is it possible to provide all the articles from a certain date forward, as the more current articles would probably be the ones that would be most sought after?  I am assuming there is a time period forward of which all articles had digital rights attached to them.

          Thanks Scrubble4

          1. AmberE | | #15

Yes, that is possible, from about 2000 forward, but you would be surprised, it's the old articles, especially out of print, that folks really want

          2. scrubble4 | | #16

Amber;  I can understand long -time readers especially wanting the old, out-of-print articles, but I think there are probably a lot of new to Threads readers who would just like electronic access to current info.  I bought my husband this service on Fine Homebuilding and he has downloaded about 100 articles.  He finds it so handy to just go in, search, find and download.  I think in education it is called the "teachable moment"  When the need is high and the info is available there is a lovely match.

That is the type of service niche I was thinking about filling for our Threads readers.  Just my thoughts and I am sure there are lots of other opinions as well.  Thanks again for your timely responses.  Scrubble4

Good to know! Thanks! I'll pass your comments on

I have that dvd package.....and I like it, it teaches good techniques.  However, I thought that the videos were too short.  I would've wanted to see them expand a little more on the areas they were trying to cover.  But overall, it's a good dvd set.

have you tried the zipper technique???? I think it is the best  way I have ever been taught to put in a zipper. I have used it on slacks several times, and I am thrilled with the way the fly front looks. I think it looks very professional. I had to leave the video up and refer back to it every step of the way,(plus a few rip outs), till I got it down pat. That alone was worth the price of the DVD.

How is the technique of fitting the zipper on the DVD any different from Sandra Betzina's (Power Sewing) or many articles that appear on and off in Threads.

It is the same method. I guess I didn't see it in threads, and the fact that it is on a video made it very easy. I guess I am more of a visual person.

I think it was some where here in Gatherings that I read about the Lutterloh pattern fitting system  http://www.lutterloh-system.com

I've been absent from sewing for so long that I might as well say I'm a virgin sewer.  I think I have forgotten more than I knew.  I don't know what sewing pro's think of this pattern fitting system, but I was impressed.  It looked so easy and the price was very reasonable.

My goal is to learn quilting, not making clothes, at least for now, but I would love to know what the pros think of this Lutterloh system.  One day I might give it a try if they think it is good.

    God Bless Everyone!
