Best Historic Sewing Information site
A friend of mine sent me a link with a photo of a ‘little red riding hood’ that she wanted to purchase for her granddaughter. I followed the link to the woman’s blog and found another link. All I can say is that it is the most in depth source for historical sewing I’ve ever seen. I love to be historically correct when making reproduction garments, and this site is unbelievable! Google books has digitized The Workwoman’s Guide, containing instructions, it is available in PDF and in a format for nook, etc. This book (published in 1840) is the author’s attempt to instruct someone about being a good housekeeper during that era. The 381 pages include detailed instructions for making everything from diapers to upholstery, with ‘plates’ diagraming each article discussed. There are also ‘recepts’ for making dye and other cleaning products, as well as advice for cleaning satin shoes. Even if you don’t want to learn the techniques they used, it makes entertaining and educational reading. Many of the instructions include directions for making things for a wealthy household as well as for the poorer families. She recommends high quality fabrics for the more wealthy families, recommending less expensive fabrics for those who are poorer.

I have made a few things from the Civil War era, but haven't tried anything from the 19-teens era. I am really looking forward to learning a lot of new techniques, as well as more about this time period.
