We Dress America.com offer

meg | Posted in General Discussion on

I received a piece of mail from We Dress America.com.  They offer a free catalog (customer pays $4.99 for shipping…) which includes 70 or 80 fabric swatches.  The website (www.wedressamerica.com) simply has a page to submit your registration/enrollment and payment method – there’s a toll-free telephone number as well.  The link didn’t work yesterday, though.  Has anyone used this fabric service before?  Is this a new enterprise with any experience?

I live miles and miles from any fabric store, and even further from decent garment fabrics.  Mail order seems to be the wave of the future, unless there’s a trip to a large city.

Thanks for your input.

I haven't used that website, but those that I love and have gotten great fabrics from are: http://www.emmaonesock.com, http://www.manhattanfaabrics.com,
    http://www.sawyerbrookfabrics.com, http://www.candlelightvalleyfabrics.com,
http://www.fashionfabricsclub.com I have ordered from all of these and I like the first two the best.
    Have fun shopping,
    Nancy

Hi, I clicked on your link and got a home page. Nothing else when I clicked where it should have opened for the catalog registration. It looks flaky to  me. The sites previously recommended to you for fabric are really good ones, plus Michael's Fabrics.

A few years ago, I signed up for and received swatches from this company. I didn't order anything, seems to be problem for me to order over the Net. I think they were located in Canada. I can't be more helpful.

Hi, I am always looking for new fabric sites. I just looked at the We Dress America site and I am not to sure about it.  The reason you probably could not access it is because it has an invalid certificate so some browsers will not open it. It is from Koral Corporation in Quebec Canada. I am not real keen on sites/people that want me to send them any money when I can't look at the product at all before I do it.

I love the http://www.manhattanfabric.com   site - it is well constructed and many of the fabrics and designers and cross referenced.

Another site I like is http://www.banksvilledesignerfabrics.com   because I can go to the store - it is a little over an hour away.  I just went to the banksville site and it has been completely revamped and it looks interesting.  Every time I go there I spend a lot of money.

I have ordered swatches from http://www.emmaonesock.com and they came promptly.  When they came I realized I had not sewn on fabric like it.

I am used to the cottons, fleece, home dec, knits and interlock knits.

Meg, There are plenty of places you can get swatches without paying for them without seeing anything.  some of the site will credit whatever you pay to your first order. Take a look at Manhattan fabrics, EmmaOneSock and BanksvilleDesignerFabrics.  You should be able to have an idea of what you want and be able to convey that prior to spending money on anything. If fabric site owners realize went to see what we pay for they will accomodate us.  j

Yes, I'm aware of Banksville & Emmaonesock, as well as the others cited, I simply was wondering if Anyone here had had contact with this We Dress America outfit.  Seems that no one here has!

I thought perhaps this group was a new source for us, but if we're all wary of them then they're no good to us!  I trust the combined efforts and knowledge of our membership.  No sense in all of us making the same mistakes if we don't have to, and everything to be gained from each other's advice.

Actually, I have had some experience with them, several years ago. I believe they placed an ad in Threads and I contacted them for a swatch set (which was free). I received quite a selection of samples, but decided against ordering as everything was synthetic or in a colour I didn't care for. They called me several times to try to entice/pressure me to order - which wasn't something I was very happy about. They also seemed to want to sell me large quantities of fabric (ie bolts) rather than cut yardage suitable for one or two garments. As I haven't seen any further advertising, I had assumed they weren't still around. My impression from talking to the woman who called me is that they were selling off excess fabric from garment manufacturing. IIRC, they were based in Montreal.
