   I've been sewing/altering velvet for years, and have never liked using a needle board.  I place my velvet on a plush towel over a seam roll and use steam and my fingers to pat the seams open.  The distance you keep the iron from the cloth varies according to fiber content.  Some rayon velvets will flatten if steam rushes out too hard & fast, so test a swatch first.  Let the area you are working on dry thoroughly before moving on to the next.

   As for final "pressing", Dry Cleaners may be able to use their large, flat sweater presses, which shoot steam up from the bottom as they brush out the wrinkles.
