Velva Boards/Needle Boards

DeeDee7 | Posted in General Discussion on

I have a difficult time steaming out velvet- although I put the right sides together, the wrinkles etc do not come out or go in on direction. I have heard of Velva Boards or Needle Borads. These are small and not easy to use when doing a large piece (a blanket) Any suggestions? I have heard of an industrial needle board but cannot find one on the web. Thanks for any info!

Try Greenberg and Hammer (sp?) in New York. Let me know if you can't find them. I have their number at my work.

I've been sewing/altering velvet for years, and have never liked using a needle board.  I place my velvet on a plush towel over a seam roll and use steam and my fingers to pat the seams open.  The distance you keep the iron from the cloth varies according to fiber content.  Some rayon velvets will flatten if steam rushes out too hard & fast, so test a swatch first.  Let the area you are working on dry thoroughly before moving on to the next.

As for final "pressing", Dry Cleaners may be able to use their large, flat sweater presses, which shoot steam up from the bottom as they brush out the wrinkles.
