upholstery books

stitcher | Posted in General Discussion on

I am planning several upholstery projects this summer. I have done it in the past but It has been a while. I am looking for;

1. the best “how to” book

2. a source—close to Michigan—for supplies. I have my fabric but need cusions, dacron wrap, cord etc.

Thank you

    I like "Upholstery Basics" from the Singer Sewing Refence series.  It has lots of pictures and very detailed explanations.
    As for supplies, you might check the phone book for upholstery suppliers.  We even have one in my small town.  Good luck!

    I found many useful website on upholstery complete with illustrations and very clear instructions. Our public library has many books on the subject, so I didn't need to buy anything instructional but learned a lot.

    For supplies, you can also check any automotive service that does interiors. Their fabrics are limited, but they often have a very good selection of underpinnings and notions.

    Most important, though, is to take very good notes and or pictures as you are taking apart the piece. Even the most extensive book won't have your exact piece in it, and keeping a record of how it comes apart will really help you put it back together.

    There is a distinct order to how a piece is covered so that each addition covers earlier raw edges. Usually, a piece "ends" underneath, so you start dis-assembling there and work your way up. As you go, you'll see what goes where, what is folded/sewn/stapled where. Keep records so that you can duplicate the sequence when you apply your new cover.
