   Nosing around Joann's, eh? And the subject of your dissertation is...? Did you really get a crochet hook through security checks? Do you wear clerical garb of any kind? (this is a sincere question!)  Actually, the book sounds interesting. I just received a design for a banner I'll be making for an Episcopal Church. I'm very excited. This will be used within a church. Does anyone think I should be concerned about dupioni silk colors fading? I'll be using thin strips of color, roughly 2"x8". Thanks,  Betsy

   Betsy,

   The Religious symbols quilt block book is from the American School of Needlework.  They have a website: http://www.asnpub.com.  I have not checked the website, but you might be able to look over the booklet there.

   We wear a habit--a black skirt-suit, white blouse and black pillbox hat.  We definitely stand out in a crowd... :)

   Dupioni should not fade too quickly, with "normal" church wear and tear.  I have seen it used in a lot of vestments and it seems to survive dry-cleaning quite well.  I learned here at the Gatherings Forum that it is very important to pre-shrink interfacing if you use it.  It keeps the silk from bubbling the first time it is cleaned.

   a-ha, perhaps your pillbox enabled you to get that crochet hook through!  Thanks for the tip on preshrinking the interfacing. I recently heard that you needn't preshrink interfacing beacuse the heat with which it's applied to the fabric will shrink it. I was very surprised, because I've certainly experienced the bubbling you mention. The source was one I respect, MABE "sewing with Nancy" on tv; I'm not sure.

   Well, I will post the pictures if anyone can tell me how to do that, please? thanks!

   Oh, yes. It will. But unfortunately it usually takes the fabric with it, and if you've cut your pieces out first......To be safe, either preshrink your interfacing or fuse before you cut. A simple rule that has saved many a project in my sewing room!

   I think it's interesting to have two "Sacred Threads".  I always have a bet with myself about which one I'm going to get.  The only problem with two is that I'm afraid I'm going to miss something.        rjf
