rolled hem with metallic thread

fabricholic | Posted in General Discussion on

I have another question, as always. Does anyone know how to cover the whole rolled hem on the overlock with metallic thread? Do I need to put metallic thread in both upper and lower loopers?

Doing a rolled hem with metallic thread is possible and can look lovely...that said, practice alot first!  Metallic thread is like aluminum foil, when you try to manuever it, it can crimp or break (tear).

Is this for a long or short rolled area?  What are you making?

    Here's what I'd try:

two thread rolled hem with metallic thread in one looper only if it will cover well and is strong enough for your purpose

you might try using clear polyester thread with the metallic going through the same looper to help it to flow through the tensions (decrease the tension some more) and give it more strength.

three thread rolled hem with metallic in both loopers (more expensive) if you can't get the coverage you need.

    Hope this helps!

Oh, poo. I wanted it to work better, than in my sewing machine. I wanted to roll hem some Christmas napkins with metallic thread. I just wanted to play around. I bought some Christmas fabric and thought I would make some napkins 16" square.

Oh give it a try!  That should work fine!  It is really fast and easy to do napkins and tablecloths!  I think I did a two thread rolled on that size with metallic thread.  Also works great for pockets and potpourie bags!!!  Go for it!!!  Much easier and faster than the SM!!!  Mary

I will try it. I've got to sew dgd dress first, though. I guess Christmas will be over by then, but I can sew them for next year. Thanks.

      Metallic rolled hem

Thank you for the advice of combining metallic thread with polyster thread. I am making a dress with ruffles all the way down them & I used gold metalic thread with yellow/orange polyster thread on my overlocker for the rolled hem on each ruffle.  It came out absolutely beautiful.  I was so shocked when I made the chain on the overlocker.  It really makes the gold stand out & gives it that little extra thickness to the rolled hem.

I have used metallic thread on the edge of napkins.  It was a couple of years ago.  I think I used wooly nylon the color of the background of your napkins, regular serger thrad to match the wooly nylon and the metallic thread.  I think I may have also used wooly nylon in both the upper and lower loopers at another time.  They came out quite nice so give it a try.

Thanks. I do have some wooley nylon in green that would go with some of the material.
