pick-ups on a flowergirl’s dress

fostermom | Posted in General Discussion on

I’m new to these forum disscussions!

I’m wanting to sew ‘pick-ups on a flowergirl’s dress for my daughter’s wedding.  I’m sure it is simple, but haven’t seen a pattern layout.  Are they just little gathers done on a rectangular very full skirt piece?  Any tricks or suggestions?  Thanks

You need to have something to sew the "pickup" to. I've hemmed them done with a full lining and I 've seen them tacked to ribbons underneath. You need to cut the dress longer than the lining as each "pickup" shortens the dress. I would drape some fabric over my ironing board and play with various sizes of pickups. Most are simply stitched down with a simple zigzag stitch set at a wide width and 0 length.
As far as how to arrange, I wish I could draw a picture, but I'll try to describe it. For the top row, you could put them about a foot apart around the garment, maybe more.
The second row would go below and inbetween the top row and the third row would fall under the first row. And so on. Hope this makes sense. Sue

Thanks.  I'll play with it on some space organza and lining material.  (My name is Sue too.  I'm new to figuring out this forum space.  I can't get my profile to take my real e-mail as it says it is already in use.  How do I get it to take it?  It's supposed to be [email protected], but it wouldn't let me register on with it, and so I just did [email protected]        I feel so computer illiterate!

If you don't have a valid e-mail address (that you check often) in your profile, then any message posted to you individually won't get to you.

It is odd that it wouldn't take your email address.

Thinking about your e-mail address problem... is your husband registered at the woodworking site (or garden site) and using [email protected]?  That might explain the 'already in use' message.  Or if you registered at the garden or cooking portion of Taunton's web site you can use the same sign-on here.

        Hope this helps,

Do you want to 'pick-up' an over layer or the whole skirt? Just the bottom edge, or several rows of 'pick-ups'?

Best to start with a very fully gathered skirt pattern, work with an uneven number of pickups (say 3 or 5). You can either gather a bit of the skirt and stitch it down to a ribbon underneath, ( makes a drape pick-up look) or pick a spot on the skirt and bring it up under the skirt and tack in place (makes a puffy pick-up look).

    Hope this helps,

    Becky

Thanks,  I'm not sure which my daughter will want me to go with, so I'll experiment on some reminants.  Your comments give me some ideas to go on.  My daughter had pointed out a flowergirl's dress with an organzaq overlay, that had the pick-ups on that.  However, her dress has the pick-ups down in taffeta, I believe.  I think she wants the 'fairy-princess" type of look for the little girl.   Thanks again for your comments.      - fostermom

    pick-ups on flower girl's dress

In 2007, two of you kind ladies responded to my question.  (I haven't been able to figure out how to thank you, and even now don't know if "suesew" or Becky-book" will read this.) But I wanted to say a big THANK you becaue between both your comments, I knew which direction to pursue and the dress was a wonderful success.  So thankyou again.
