marking tools

Becky-book | Posted in General Discussion on

I am looking for chalk refils for a marking tool I have had for many years. I think it was called a Tailor tacker.  It has two pieces that each hold a small piece of chalk (photo attached) The photo is from the Singer Refrence Library book Sewing Essentials. It is very handy for marking two dots at a time on matching pieces (two sleeves)

Have you checked the Notions wall at Joanns or Hancocks Fabrics? They may have this Tailor Tacker and Pattern Perforator that you are looking for. I have one still in the package hanging on my Tools and Stuff wall just above my sewing machine, but unfortunately I can't recall where I bought it. Another one in my collection came from a box of sewing goodies at an auction sale. Guess that doesn't help you very much, does it?

As I was re-reading this discussion it hit me "in its package" !!!!  Do you have the name of the company, an address or any other info.  off the package that might help track down a supplier?

      Thanks,

      Becky

A lot of people are looking for these, including me. Can't be found anywhere. I now use a pin stuck through the spot and rub chalk around the tip, then put it through that mark to the other side and repeat.

I guess I may eventually resort to that method, when my  last piece of chalk breaks.

      Thanks!

    Hello,

I bought this marking tool last summer at ARDEE Merchandise Of Canada Ltd (2012 Douglas, Victoria, BC V8T 4K9, Canada, tel.: 250-360-1135).

I don't remember if they sell refills too.

    Good luck!

      Dear Lise-Laure,

Thank you!  There is hope that someone is still making these handy little tools!!

You are welcome, Becky. I must confess mine is still in its package too. It's called a Tailor Tacker. There is a number (21105) and an address : Dritz Division, Scovill Industries Limited, London, Ontario N6E 2W9.

          Dear Lise-Laure,

Thanks for the name of the company (I thought that they were a likely pick) but the Dritz on-line catalogue no longer shows this Tailor Tacker.  I may write (snail-mail) to the company then just give up the search!

          Thanks, y'all!

            Dear Becky,

I try to "reduce, reuse or recycle" most of the time. But in this case, if you cannot get a chalk refill, maybe Ardee in Victoria B.C. will accept to put a new Tailor Tacker into an enveloppe for you. I paid mine 1.5 Canadian dollar.

Is the chalk refill close to the size of classroom chalk? I've been using that for years for marking fabrics. Maybe you could whittle a piece down to size?

I had thought about trying to use some other kind of chalk refill, but the problem is the tiny hole in the center of the chalk that is used to allow the pin to align the marker on both sides of the two pieces of fabric (see photo). It really is an ingenious little tool for marking two pieces in exactly the same spot! Thanks for the idea, makes me wonder how the manufacturer makes their chalk!

You might be able to replicate that hole with a small drill bit or even an ice pick, of course being very, very careful while you're doing it! Classroom chalk is cheap, so you try some different techniques. I've used sandpaper and paring knives to shape it into something I need, and nearly always a curious neighbor has stopped by to laugh while I'm doing it.

I recently purchased some from either Nancy's Nothions or Clotilde via the web.  They now make it in a cartridge pen that is easier to handle.

I came across your very old post while researching this tool I found in a vintage sewing cabinet. I think I found the chalk you were looking for, as well as the tool that holds it!  if you would like  the chalk after all this time,  I would very much like to give it to you as a PIF. Let me know!
