Losing My Mind

cycler1729 | Posted in General Discussion on

I felt the urge to sew today so I got my machine out and wound the color thread that I needed on a new bobbin.

When I went to put it back in, it was too loose in the machine.  I compared it to my old bobbin but it was the same size.  I kept putting it in and taking it out but it didn’t fit.

I was about to look at my manual when I saw that sneaky bobbin holder off to the side.

I know it’s been a while since I’ve sewed but I’ve been using the same brand of machine for about 30 years so for me to forget that – I felt like such an idiot (or worse)!

You were just caught up in the moment. All excited to get going on your project, that is all. Or those nasty little sewing room elves that move things are out to get you...... hahahaha Cathy

I have a friend who is still searching for the cassette tape she bought as a gift and hid in a safe place about 6 years ago! I spent almost 2 hours looking for a pattern piece that I'd been holding earlier. (It had slipped out of sight behind a bookcase.) Every 15 minutes I would wonder if I'd gone insane and then go searching again.

Tee hee...I knew I bought a package of mixed nuts last year, just before Thanksgiving.(DH loves to open & eat them, leaving shells all over the carpet and his favorite chair.)  I spent several hours looking for them, and finally went back to the store to get more....last week I found them!  They were hiding (in the grocery bag) under my son's jacket on a hook on the back of the pantry door. He hasn't worn that jacket since then......At least I know I haven't LOST my mind....I've just misplaced it a time or two.....And, yep... I've been cleaning up shells....  :^[

You guys have me lol here at work.  I too have been miffed by those little thieves.  giggle.  I'm always looking for something.  Sometimes I spend so much time looking for something, I don't have time to do it now that I've found what I was looking for.  That's during the week nights usually.

I refused to get a cordless phone for years. It was just another thing to look for. I was right. Right now I am having problems with my tomato pin cushion, it keeps hiding. Now I know why. One of the cats keeps taking it and pulling the pins out. Then she hides it. I am going to have to hide it from her....Cathy

I saw a program on WTTW about ferrats and how they take your things and hide them also.  Cats do that too, how cute. giggle.  Makes you do some detective work!

My new puppy is doing that allready.  Her favorite game is "chase me chase me" and if I don't play, she grabs my shoe or keys or whatever and looks right at me until I chase her!  If I ignore her, the item "disappears".

Cats are priceless.....I once went off to work and left a pattern that I was working on spread out on the table.   I came home to find it in shreads.  I'm sure my cat "Vincent" had great fun that day.   Another thing he used to do that unnerved me was turn the TV on.   I tended to turn the TV off as I left for work and drop the remote on the love-seat.  He would apparently walk across and it and turn it on.  The first time I came home to find it playing, I thought I was losing my mind.

Another time I asked my best friend (who lived next door) to drop in and feed him while I was out of town for the weekend.  When she opened the door and heard the TV, she thought I decided not to go, until she searched the house.

I SWEAR cats watch TV. Ours also walk across the remotes. Usually when we are watching our favorite shows. They will settle in and watch some with us. Others, they pace back and forth, walk over the remote until the channel changes, like they do not like the show. Right now Jackaranda is sitting on the mouse pad, watching the cursor move across the screen. In a moment, she will again walk across the keyboard, and I will have to erase an unholy mess, like I was swearing.....
I cannot leave a pattern out when my Bunny is out of his cage. He will even climb up on a chair to get it off of the kitchen table in order to shred it. There is something about the tissue paper they love. Cathy

          8. SewFit | | #32

Rusty, a cat I once had, loved to sit on top of the monitor and lean over to watch the curser.

Now I just have one pet, a 10 year old pug named Bertha.  Friday, I walked down the hall to find her standing in the doorway of my office staring at my laptop.   My daughter is a radio personality in another state and I listen to her on-line whenever I can.   I finally decided that Bertha must have recognized her (my daughter's) voice and wondered where it was coming from. LOL

While I have no cats, I do have 2 kids under the age of 5.  I can't recall if it was sleep deprivation or memory loss due to pregnancy, but one day I opened the dishwasher to unload it after a wash cycle, and there sat the cordless phone on the top rack!  I was the only person who could've put it there (DH doesn't seem to understand the concept of this appliance!), so I'm sure it was me who did it.

Did it still Work? At least it was clean. Little fingers do help put things in odd places too. My girlfriend came to visit. When it came time for her to leave, she could not find her keys. We looked high and low for them. She loses them frequently, however this was the worst time. Finally, I asked the girls (all at the 5 and under age) if they had seen them. MissyInTheMiddle had said No with a look on her face that said something was amiss. So I started checking out her favorite hidey holes (for hiding her sister's things). Sure 'nuff, in the far back of the bookcase, behind the books, were my friend's keys. She confessed, when I dangled them in front of her, that she did not want my friend to leave. She was about 3 at the time. Cathy

No, the phone didn't work after the thorough cleaning!  The most recent lost item is my car payment bill, which wouldn't normally be an issue, but it's the first one, so I don't have the account number anywhere else!  I'll be calling Chrysler Financial first thing in the morning!  This afternoon I labeled and filled an accordian file folder with statements, receipts, and bills, as DH is always looking for a paper that is around here somewhere...

          14. rodezzy | | #41

Last night, I started pinning another Kimono coat and the elves had taken the back facing pattern piece.  I can't find it anywhere!  So I pulled another pattern to start on tonight.

          15. MaryinColorado | | #55

Maybe if you ask them nicely, they will bring it back soon.  Or maybe they want some chocolate or dandelion wine or?

          16. rodezzy | | #60

I don't know what they want, but they didn't bring them back yet.

          17. MaryinColorado | | #64

Maybe they want to hear some music or you could sing for them.

          18. Teaf5 | | #57

I can't tell you how many waxed paper back facings I've made in my day...but when I pull out a favorite pattern, neither the waxed paper one nor the original is to be found!

I lost my favorite silver necklace for 3 years after "hiding" it before going on a little trip.  I felt sure I had left it at the Grand Canyon and gave it up for lost.  I couldn't imagine not having taken it as it was one I wore all the time.  All I could remember was tucking it under something and thought I must have done this when we went to dinner and didn't want someone to find it if they came into the cabin.  I did call, but it was not turned in.  Finally found it when I took my serger out of it's table cabinet to take to a sewing class!  There was my jewelry pouch tucked in the corner.  For some reason the mind (my mind anyway) never seems to think the same way twice.  I usually find something after I have quit looking for it and am looking for something else.  I have learned to never accuse others of taking my things!

          22. MaryinColorado | | #53

Excellent words of wisdom~thank you, I'll try to remember that before I do it again!

My dog - a little white poodle - never liked being home alone.

I had a black knit hat that had a pom-pom on it that I wanted to take off but I was never able to see where to safely cut it.  One day I came home and there was the hat - completely intact except that the pom-pom had been removed STRAND BY STRAND!

            True story!

Oh I love those little fairies!  They just enjoy being mischievous from time to time.  Maybe it's their way of reminding us to thank them for all the other things they do for us like keeping nature in as much balance as possible, considering all we humans do to undermine them.

If you praise them from time to time and show appreciation, they might not play so many tricks on you.  They aren't really stealing, since they bring them back!  Just borrowing and teasing you or teaching you a "lesson"!

(That's not to say there aren't dark fairies shhhhhhhhh  too, but that's another story.)  Mary

For Mother's Day this year I got a little Lavender garden in a circle with Moss Roses all around the edge.  There is a little wrought iron fairy living there with a frog prince and some bunnies.  The puppy likes to walk along the edge of the rocks and look down.  It must please the fairies because there weren't nearly as many missing tools this year and the spray end of my hose only disappeared once or twice.

I heard something a while back that when you've lost something if you tie a towel around the bottom of a chair your lost item will appear the next time you look!

What if I can't find the chair?Seriously, I'm just taking a break from removing doors, hardware from kitchen cabinets and sanding. I LOVE this little sander I got. My shoulder can't manage much lifting and I was afraid this thing was so small it would be a waste of money. It's perfect for my needs. I have ugly curtain material draped over everything to keep out the dust and I'm sure other people would wonder how I could find anything amid the mess.My motivation is to get all this mess out of the way so I can move the sewing room and then make some beautiful things to go with the freshly repaired and painted kitchen and living room. I've got big plans for the sofa, windows, etc.Several months ago when I was agonizing over switching the sewing room I mentioned that part of my problem was that if I removed the carpet in the new room it would be awfully cold. I had a man come give me estimates on some minor repairs and he's going to include insulating the floor of the room/ceiling of the basement garage. Everyone, please think positive thoughts that it won't be too expensive. The room is SO sunny and bright and would be perfect. Well, I've got to go clean up the mess for today. I'll remember about the towel. I fear that people will be asking me why all my dining room chairs are adorned with towels.

You have so many talents.  I want to do my kitchen.  Not enough interest yet.  Sounds like you are getting a lot accomplished and having a good time doing it.  I have everything crossed that you will get the deal of a lifetime.  giggle.

          39. Ralphetta | | #25

Many years ago, as I lay under the kitchen sink with a wrench in my hand, I kept saying to myself, "I can take my sewing machine apart and reassemble it, I can make a Vogue pattern, plumbling can't be any harder, I can do this." I cried in frustration but when I got finished I felt 10 feet tall. Not having much money makes you more creative. Most of my female relatives were like that. I think that hearing the crazy things they did themselves because they couldn't afford to hire someone else, (and they felt smart enough to learn,)
made it natural for the younger girls to jusmp in and attempt things. My grandmother was about 5'10' and would repaper a room anytime she got bored. She couldn't find a paperhanger willing to redo her entrance hall and stairway in her old house because it was so steep. They told her it was dangerous, (the last guy who attempted it broke his back.) She was about 72 and when the family came to visit and saw it redone she casually explained how she'd done it herself by balancing boards on ladders, etc.!Thanks for the good wishes about my getting my room insulated. Looking forward to having a bright cheerful place to sew would be a big incentive to get this other stuff finished. I need prodding 'cause I'm not seeing results fast enough.

If we women want something badly enough, we will find a way. That is how we are made. If that means doing it ourself, so be it. After all, we got the extra rib for a reason. It means we have the extra stuff to do things for ourselves. We build our nests and maintain them, and the people in them. That is our nature.
My place is the same, if I want it done, I do it myself. Your remodel is at that hard place right now, where everything takes time. Pretty quickly it will go BOOM and progress will be seen. Just think how great you will feel when it is done. Way to go Girl! Cathy

I remember when I said, "if a man can buy a house, a car, have a wife, children and a mistress on the same salary as I have, I can buy a house, car and send my son to private school and have change left over.  And back then, that's just what I did.

Hip Hip Hurray for you.  Just be patient, it will all come together, like ThreadKoe said "BOOM" and it will all be done.  Good Luck.

Thanks for the encouragement. This thread was about losing things..I was losing my motivation/incentive somewhere in the sawdust, tarps and tools. Will tieing a towel around a chair help with that, also?

At least with the pattern, you have reason not to see something you were holding a few moments ago...I received a $200 gift card as a bonus from work and hid it so well that I had to pay $10 to get it replaced a year later!  It was such a hassle that I asked them for cash instead, and put it in old sewing machine cabinet our kids used to pretend was a cash register.  I figured that, if I forgot that, they'd at least find it someday!

The dye supply elves were at work in my house lately.  I spent several hours on Friday night looking for a dye color.  I couldn't imagine why it wasn't with the others and then I noticed 2 other colors are AWOL.  I finally remembered why they aren't with the other dyes but I still haven't found them.

The very next day, I can go to get one, AND THEY ARE ALL GONE, except for the pens, WHICH DO NOT WORK! Go Figure. Cathy

          11. rodezzy | | #58

Not yet, they haven't reached the kitchen yet, maybe because I rarely go in there myself.

        1. MaryinColorado | | #48

I wear contacts sometimes and have to use "reading glasses" for close work.  Usually I wear my bifocals.  More than once, I am wearing the wrong pair of glasses and looking for the other pair, that are on top of my head like a headband!

      3. MaryinColorado | | #46

ha ha ha!  Yes, the garden elves and fairies must be asked permission before you pick things from your garden or cut flowers, etc.  They don't like chemical pesticides and fertilizers either.

Think about it, how does it feel when you wake up on Sunday morning early because a neighbor's mowing the lawn?  Now amplify that by a million.  Can you imagine getting a hoseful of water in your bed?

They are so tiny and really love to help things grow but will not hestitate to remind you gently or otherwise if they are upset!
