Introduction….

deepikap1 | Posted in General Discussion on

Hello everyone,

I am new to this board and to sewing. My name is Deepika, I am 27 years old and happily married to the most wonderful man in the whole world 🙂 I developed this  hobby for sewing in august last year and I have had so much fun ever since! I do not have  serger yet and I am pretty happy with my Kenmore sewing machine. It makes beautiful one step buttonholes and the stitch quality is pretty good too. My hobbies are sewing, gardening, crafts and digital photography. I work full time as a software engineer in a startup and I love my job! I would love to know more about everyone here.

Hi, Deepika! Welcome to the board. How did your husband like his custom-tailored shorts? (FYI to others: Deepika and I are well-acquainted already via email, so I know that while her husband was recently out of town, she dove in and made him a pair of shorts complete with welt pockets and all!). I hope he reciprocated by bringing back some gorgeous fabric for you.

For you and others to know: you can attach photos to posts here; I think there's a way to have the photos come right up in the message, but I've decided to stick with the basic attachment method rather than use up a lot of grey cells trying to memorize the other way. Anyway, if you'd like to post a picture of the famous shorts, please feel free--we'd love to see your work!

Thanks for asking Carol... I do have to say a few things about the shorts. I will post a detailed review as soon as I take a photo of those shorts. They are nice but they are a little tight from the thigh area. Also I think I marked the position of the back welt pocket wrong and it seems to be a little low in the back. And finally let me tell you that the pattern I used was for pants, I just trimmed them in order to make shorts. I should have widened them at the hem because now they look like cropped pants :) Anyway, I am glad that I did learn a few good techniques while making these.

        Hi Deepikap1,

I'm trying to decide how to pronounce your name....Dee-pikap?  Deep-ikap? Some other variation?  Very impressive to try men's shorts so early in your sewing career!  You've made some nice things for yourself, I hope.  What kinds of software do you do?  That must be either the most fascinating or frustrating of jobs.  Maybe both at the same time.  It seems to me that the thinking of a software project must be similar to thinking about a sewing project.  Very sequential and test each step.  Welcome aboard.         rjf

The P at the end is actually the initial of Deepika's last name, so you don't pronouce it at all!

Thanks for the warm welcome rjf,

Regarding my name its Deepika(Firstname) Prakash(last name). And its pronounced almost just the way its spelled. so 'Deep' 'eeka' (one word).

Software is fun and I find ways to incorporate it into my daily life. In fact since you mentioned, and since I am so new to sewing and found internet a valuable resource for new (like me) and experienced (probably like you) sewers, I decided to create an interactive website (http://www.PatternReview.com) where sewers would be able to meet and post reviews of various sewing patterns, stores and other sewing related items. In the last few months the site has taken off very well and it has given me and other users a chance to share and learn from each others experiences.

We have an online article about Deepika's website scheduled to post on the Threads homepage in July. Keep your eye out, and meanwhile, visit her site. It's really helpful and a lot of fun to look through. You can see the famous linen shorts there, too!

      Hi:

I am new to your forum and was happy to find such an informative site connected to Threads Magazine!

I have sewn since I was a child, quilted since 1981, had my own alterations business for a while and also owned and operated my own fabric shop for six years! I still sew and quilt all the time and love it. Threads is my favorite sewing related magazine. I think it is a wealth of great information and helps those of us who want to learn more and produce more professional looking results.

I love learning something new and sharing what I know and look forward to participating on this forum!  Joyce in Colorado

        Hi Joyce,

Welcome to Gatherings. I am also very new here and its good to have more people introduce themselves. Hope to see you around in some interesting discussions on this site.

Thanks for the tip on the great website! I already checked it out and hopefully I can submit a review from time to time. I think it is so valuable to hear about a pattern from another home sewer, and to share useful websites. Thanks again. Joyce
