how to shorten formal dress with train

rsew | Posted in General Discussion on

I’m in the process of shortening a long bridesmaids dress with a train.  The front of the dress must be shortened 5 1/2 inches, how do I figure out how much to shorten the sides and the back (train) of the dress?

    shortening a dress

If there are more than one bridesmaid, then all dresses have to be shortened at the train the same as the front so all dresses look uniform.  If only one b.maid, I shorten the front and sides tapering into the back train to save customer a little expense on my time.  Bride may have a preference on how long the train is to be or maybe none at all.

I offer 2 options........shorten the same length all around the dress OR near the side seams shorten to  length floor plus approx 5cm tapering to leave all the length at the centre back.

I agree with the other posters.  If the gown needs to be shortened that much to be floor length on the bridesmaid, I'll shorten the train to make the proportions the same.  Otherwise, the gown gets shortened only in the front, tapering back to the train length at the sideseams.
