‘Hello Christina’ & Silk Matka…

Jancee2 | Posted in General Discussion on

Hi everyone. I’ve been enjoying a lovely browse thru all your messages, specially from Christina in Germany. We were stationed there with the RAF many years ago and I learned to sew trousers etc for my then school age sons using patterns with instructions in German. With very good illustrations I managed – and I am ashamed to admit that I didn’t learn to speak the language properly during our stay, though I could shop, order meals etc!

The other item of particular interest to me was the mention of True Grid – Tru Grid ?? -in the Silk Matka interfacting discussion. Please, what is it and where can I get it? Vilene [Freudenberg] used to make something with a grid but it has now been discontinued. I tried the firm a few weeks ago withut success.

It is really great to join in sewing chat – I love it. Best wishes – Jancee

    Hi Jancee,

I hope that you liked beeing in Germany and learning how to sew. If you have problems with German instruction please ask! I'll try to translate. I'm doing just the other thing. I start with american patterns, but I already have some sewing-experience! But one more question: what is the RAF. We had some problems with a terror organisation called RAF, but I don't thing that it is the same organisation!!!!!!!!!

    Greetings

    Christina

Hi Christina - it is great to hear from you, and thank you for your offer of help when I need it. I'm feeling very happy today because I made 2 pairs of trousers for myself this week and the fit is better than anything I have achieved before. [I'm not saying how many pairs I made before I reached this happy state, but I think the days of golf/decorating trousers are at last behind me!] Thanks to Garment Designer - and a pencil and a pair of scissors!

R A F stands for the British 'Royal Air Force'. We were stationed at Gutersloh in the late 1960s and very much enjoyed living in your country. Our sons were around 8 and 11 years old then and I couldn't buy clothes to fit them as German little boys seemed to be a different shape from English little boys. If trousers fit them round the middle they were too short, and if they were long enough they were huge round the middle! So - I just had to make their stuff. Fabrics and sewing notions were easy to buy. We had a good store in Gutersloh, called Hertie, where we could get everything we needed. Bielefeld was fairly close too. We took the chance to have some lovely holidays, visiting part of the Harz Mountains, Heidelberg, Bavaria... It was lovely. We weren't far from Enschede and the Dutch border either. We bought camping equipment for our holidays and had some great times.

Sorry if I've spent too much time 'off topic'. Shall look forward to hearing from you again. Jancee
