cutting 4 way stretch

fabricator | Posted in General Discussion on

I am making some pants in 4 way stretch “sports” fabric and am about to cut, but notice the warp is significantly stretchier than the weft.  I’m so used to placing the grainline along the warp of the fabric (aligning with the selvages), I hesitate to change it, but it seems it would make sense to have the most stretch going around the body.  Perhaps, with these modern fabrics it doesn’t matter as much.

Any advice?

The direction of greatest stretch should be around your body.  I would also gently wash the fabric first to remove any excess chemicals and sew with a stretch type needle.
