cloud or balloon hem in a wedding dress

Sallysews | Posted in General Discussion on

I am making a wedding dress of duchess satin. It is from a picture, no pattern. The dress has a balloon hem in it. I was wondering if anyone out there has experience in making balloon hems in gowns? Thanks, Sallysews

    Yes, I've done them.

There are a couple of ways to do it, but the easiest is to cut the lining of the skirt by a straight skirt pattern, then gather the outer (fuller skirt) at the bottom to attach to the lining.  You'll want the lining to be shorter than the outer skirt, and you might choose to stuff the gathers with balls of tulle or organdy to help it hold its shape.

Thank you Shannon for your helpful reply. I also received a suggestion from Threads Magazine to attach this lining by buttons close to the waist so one could unbutton the lining for pressing, which I thought was pretty neat.
