Boning as underwire?
Hi. I'm really excited to finally sew this dress of a pattern that I drafted. this pattern is a bustier dres with bust cups. I really want to add support to the bra cups, similar to that of a bra. I know that in order to do that I must use underwire, the only problem is that I do not want to buy underwire because I can only get it online (and quite frankly, the shipping and handling would be WAYYY more expensire then the underwire itself!) I was wondering if regular boning in a casing would work as underwire? Since I have to add boning anyway to the sides of my bustier.

Don't think this would work. (post #35446, reply #1 of 5)
Don't think this would work. You could buy/ or take apart an old bra?
I didn't this so (post #35446, reply #2 of 5)
I didn't this so either, but I've heard of people doing it.... I was thinking that maybe spiral boning would work
Regular boning would be too (post #35446, reply #3 of 5)
Regular boning would be too wide and would not lay against your body properly or comfortably. I'd go with borrowing one from an old bra (maybe even from a thrift store?)
A thrift store bra (post #35446, reply #4 of 5)
A thrift store bra sounds like a good idea :)
While I haven't done it, I've (post #35446, reply #5 of 5)
While I haven't done it, I've seen boning used like underwire in bridal gowns. They sew in 1/4" rigalene boning on both sides curving as they sew it under the bust. Sometimes there is also 1/4" boning sewn on the princess line to the neckline of the strapless gown. then wider 1/2" boning is used down the center front, severa lshort paralell vertical rows under the bust,on side seams, back princess seams and 1/4" boning on both sides of the lacing in back. Are there any bridal shops near you where you can go and check out the construction of the gowns?
