Attachine rhinestones to lycra

bss7 | Posted in General Discussion on

Are there any costume makers on this website who attach rhinestones to stretch fabric for costumes?   What is the best glue to use in order to prevent those stones from falling off when the fabric is stretched?     Those skating costumes look fabulous and have lots of rhinestones on them, so there must be a good glue to keep them attached.      Thanks in advance for your help.

There are several ways of attaching rhinestones to fabric:
Sewn-like beads, or strings of them can be couched on by machine or hand
Glued-white glue or a fabric glue
Iron on-come in patterned sheets you iron on like transfers or patches
Nail heads-with prongs that go through the fabric. Should also use a touch of glue to seal the holes in a knit.A lot depends on how many you want to attach and where. For something like a skating costume, I would stitch them on or use the nail head types because they would be dangerous on the ice if they fell off. Cathy

When I made Western Pleasure show clothes for my daughter, I used lycra as the base fabric (the black and the white is lycra, the pink and orange is ultra suede) for the bodysuit-type shirt and then attached heat fix Swarovski crystals with a L'orna heat wand.  The picture was taken after 2 summers of horse showing every weekend.  Despite all the laundering, we didn't lose any crystals!

Absolutely stunning! I am not familiar with this system of attaching rhinestones. Can you tell me more please? Cathy

Thank you for the compliment.  The wand reminds me of a woodburning tool only with a threaded end so you can attach 'heads' that accept a variety of different diameter crystals.  The crystal is picked up, the heat travels quickly through the glass to melt the adhesive coating on the flat side of the crystal.  Simply touch the crystal to the fabric and lift the wand.  Bought mine at Joann's about 7 years ago.  My daughter used this when she made her prom dresses (on poly stretch satin, organza and silk charmeuse) and I used it to attach transparent crystals to a piece of Russian veiling for a bridal veil.  The results were gorgeous!  There are numerous online distributors for the crystals and the color selection is great! I have always insisted on Swarovski crystals because their sparkle is top-notch!  Hope this helps.

It does look like a wood burning tool! I could have made good use of that this last spring at prom time. Will have to look into that here. Thank you. Cathy

I'm absolutely slack jawed!  That shirt is knock-down gorgeous!  You did a wonderful job, and I can only imagine how fortunate your daughter feels that you put so many hours and so much love in this project for her enjoyment.  Stunning ...absolutely stunning.
