"The Art of Sewing" Time-Life series...

Rabia's picture

I have a few of the books from this series, but I have NO idea how many there actually are. Is anyone here familiar with this series? It's dated as h-e-l-l (it came out in the 70s) but I enjoy reading the books and would like to complete the series.

Hhmm, this particular series (post #32246, reply #1 of 6)

Hhmm, this particular series was new to me.  Google brought up start out hits of there being 10 -12 -14 in the series, depedning on which URL was checked.

I'm more familiar with the Singer Books from the same time period.  I added these to my sewing library because they were sold in retail places i frequented.

Did a google serach & found this address.  Would you consider using  USPS to try for specific data?  I'm uanble to find any way to reach it via cyber space.

Time Life Headquarters Address. 8280 Willow Oaks Corporate Drive Suite 800 ... Annandale, VA 22003.

In the Google process, I found mention of the series being either 10-12-14 volumes.  Another  member might be able to offer you more.

I have four of these books (post #32246, reply #2 of 6)

I have four of these books and have hated to ever get rid of them.  I enjoy looking back over them from time to time as well.  Mine are Shortcuts to Elegance, Traditional Favorites, The Personal Touch, The Custom Look.  I can't remember for sure but figure I started out buying the series but back then in the 70's we were a young family and $$ was tight so those are all the books I ordered at that time.

I have seen some of these books at garage sales etc.  There is also a humungous book sale here in Calgary every spring and I wouldn't be surprised if some of them showed up there.

Here is a website that I just looked up and seems there were 21 books in all.

Good luck on your search.

Great search results (post #32246, reply #3 of 6)

Great search results Heather.  A more thorough one that I was able to find.  Your information gives a positive nod to the caveat imptore cliche.  Those I happened upon listed the # 10 or 12 or 14 offered as "a complete set."    Your post belies those for certain.

There are 16 books in the series and a Master Index.  The Master Index is a paperback, the same size as the books.  The list provided in the link that says there are 21 books actually has 20, but three of them are repeats, just worded differently.  The extra is the Master Index.  I have all the books, including the Master Index and would be happy to help with specific questions about the series.

Thanks, everyone, for your input...Marymary, yes, I did see somewhere that there were 21 books, but thanks for letting me know the details! Somebody here not too far from where I am has a 15-piece set for sale and is soliciting offers...I think I will put one in! I will have repeats of a few of the issues, but that's ok!

Good luck, Rabia with your (post #32246, reply #6 of 6)

Good luck, Rabia with your offer.  I did buy mine as a set at the Salvation Army a number of years ago.  The pictures are dated, but the information is not.  The date in the Master Index is 1976.  I think I remember reading in one of David Page Coffin's books that he recommends the Tailoring one as a good source for tailoring information.  I think they are a great set of books.
