Any Sewers the area of Bethlehem, PA???

neuwife | Posted in General Discussion on

One of my 2007 goals is to learn to sew.  I have just signed up for a quilting class, all straight, short lines, but my REAL desire is to learn to sew apparel.  Is there anyone out there who has the same interests, and maybe would like to form a small group?

I’m relatively new to the Lehigh Valley, my husband and I have been here about one year.

I’m also hoping to find people in my area who like to sew apparel and who might want to to a monthly sewing group in which we can get together show off our successes, get sympathy or pointers over mistakes, and share our interest in fabrics, fashion, etc.

If I may share this, too:  I have been wanting to sew for so long, and I have yards of  fabric and about a dozen patterns sitting around waiting for me to dive in and go for it!  My husband does not understand my need to collect fabric when he’s only seen me sew a pillowcase!

Hoping to find future fabric/sewing friend(s).

Hi neuwife, welcome to sewing! I'm not from PA, but have seen your message go unanswered and thought I'd jump in. Lots of folks on this forum will be happy to help you as you have questions, and will also appreciate your input...I've benefitted so much from the suggestions of experts and encouragement of fellow posters here. It seems it's hard to find a group of people who want to sew, to actually meet with in person, but this forum is the next best thing. Meanwhile, until someone else from your area finds your posting and responds here, this link will let you look for local chapters of the American Sewing Guild.http://www.asg.org/html/chapters.html

The Guild is a non-profit organization with chapters all over. I'm going to check out a local group near me at their next monthly meeting. You might also find some like-minded souls in your quilting class. Hope this helps. You've probably seen that most of us have accumulated significant stashes of fabric and patterns...my husband just doesn't look anymore. There's another thread on this site where posters are introducing themselves as fabric addicts. Welcome to Fabrics Anonymous.

I live about 30 minutes from you. If you send me an email, I'll give you my phone number, or you give me yours in email and I will call you. Been sewing many, many years. Not a pro. Should be able to help you amd I have a friend in Bethlehem that I will introduce you to.    [email protected]     Later,

Thanks for the link - I contacted the Philadelphia chapter, and they informed me that there is a chapter in NJ right across the river from me!

And I the more I look on this Gatherings board, the more I find that I have found a whole online community of sewing enthusiasts!

Hello NEU ! I so hope you find that sewing buddy. I was a sewing buddy to someone way back in the mid 1970's and we are still best friends today.  I live in Delaware, not so far from Bethlehem, however, not a practical commute.  I have sewn for myself, my son, costumes for Hollywood and Las Vegas, and most enjoy quilting and fiber arts. I am using all the various techniques I have learned over the years and put it together to make my "art".  I love to see things go together. I graduated from FIDM (Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising) and have a degree in patternmaking/and design. One of the things I used to love to do was to study details of historic costumes/fashion and translate that into something modern.  We can learn a lot from fashion history.  I am going on I know, but I guess I am trying to encourage you to keep your interest alive in sewing and try taking it slow at first then challenge yourself in future projects.  Sewing is a skill that we should keep alive and encourage others to learn and create.

    Good luck to you !

Hi: I'm the editor of Threads and want to welcome you. I have a weekend home in the Poconos, kind of close! I don't know your area, but would  love to hear what you discover!
