Antique spool of thread

annettegh | Posted in General Discussion on

I am not involved in sewing but wrote to your magazine for advice. I found among my late grandmother’s possessions a spool of white nylon thread on a black base with the date 11-19-40 and the words Premier Thread Co., Pawtucket, R.I. on the bottom. Does anyone know of a thread or sewing supplies collector of older items who might be interested in this. If so, please e-mail me directly at [email protected]. Thank you.

Heehee, in some of our stashes, a 1940s spool of thread is one of the "newer" in the group!

Seriously, though, thread degrades over time, so it is not in demand, even by those who sew with vintage fabrics.  Yours is interesting in that it is probably among the first made of nylon and was purchased during the war years, when cotton, wool, and the wood to make spools were being re-directed to the military effort.

However, for every item, there seems to be a collector, so it will be fun to see if someone wants it.  Please let us know, so that maybe some of us can find homes for some of our stash!

Came upon your post today.  As mentioned, there are sewists who enjoy having displays of antique or vintage notions.  With a 1940 indication, your spool would be considered vintage.  The antique category comes in at100 or more years old.

The spool is likely sellable at a Flea Market, or another such second hand venue.  On the off chance you have other sewing related items from your grandmother, you can group the all & offer the lot at a price.  Exactly what that might be is a variable by the all & your location.   For ideas, you could consider browsing e-bay or i offer to get a feel of what's what.

My curiosity is your knowing the thread is nylon.  Was this noted somelace on the spool along with the manufacturer?

Please consider posting again & letting us know how things evovled for you.

Thank you for your feedback. The only other response I received was one saying that there was a lot of older spools of thread out there and this one wasn't that special. The reason I know it's nylon is a sticker on the bottom saying "Nylon K34, W55 White."

        You're very welcome.

Indeed, there are many "old" spools of thread in the second hand markets.  What you'd receive in the sale of yours is a varaible.  Good luck.

I have a very small collection of antique spools of thread and they are fun to display, but not to sew with as they would have degraded. Most likely yours would only be wanted for display or possibly a thread collector so the poster who mentioned that if you had more sewing related items, to try to sell them together has the right idea. One never knows what will interest another person, but I know I don't go out of my way to get vintage sewing things, I usually pick them up with a 'lot' of mixed sewing items that there is something in the lot that is worth (to me) the purchase price of the whole lot.

So nice to see that someone isn't just willy nilly trashing things that others might be interested in.

Thank you for your response. Unfortunately the vintage spool of thread is the only sewing related item I have from my grandmother so I have no other items to display or sell in a grouping.

    my vintage purchases

I buy a lot of vintage stuff from Farmhouse Fabrics, LLC  http://www.farmhousefabrics.com/

I think they have a lot of beautiful things and I find them really reliable.  I really enjoy browsing through their new items and browse weekly.
