Where is everybody?

Josefly's picture

Where are all the old friends from this forum?  Well, I don't really mean all - I appreciate those who've stayed active on Gatherings, and the new names, too.  But I do miss the frequent, sometimes more than once-daily, participation of so many regulars we used to have BTC (before the change).  I loved that you could get on the forum, and in just a few minutes, new questions/comments/replies would be flying, as you were reading.  Now  when you look at the list of recent topics with the time of posting and the times of replies, you see very few that were posted on this same day!  - Most have dates of weeks ago, not hours  or minutes ago.  Wow, what a difference!  It makes me sad.

Just wondering - is there another sewing forum, one which perhaps uses the more user-friendly format we were once blessed with here - where those old friends are now posting/browsing/visiting?  I know a bunch of people who were regulars on the Over the Fence have gone somewhere else, but I haven't "shopped around" yet for another site.  Any tips?

I haven't checked in for ages but I am in agreement with what everyone has been saying about the new Gatherings set-up.  It's not user friendly and gets to be frustrating.  I don't feel as if I'm connecting with a subject or a person so I just peek in every now and then.  I must say that it is wonderful to see some of the past members still hanging in with the forums.  I'll try a little harder but I wish it would return to the previous format.

Glad you checked back in.

I don't think the powers that be are going to return to the old format, however much all we users wish they would.  Perhaps it doesn't matter as much to them as it does to us that it's so difficult to use and that so many valuable former participants have given up.  But, I think the site will only be as valuable as the users make it - maybe it will recover and maybe not.  I'm hoping it will.

Today is the first time that I've been here in a while.  I used to be here several times a day, but now it's good if I check in here several times a month.  :-(   Although the format of this site seems to be getting better, it's still cumbersome to navigate.  I miss having all the topics listed along the left-hand side.  And, like everyone who's replied to your message, I miss the lively conversations and information that everyone freely shared.

There are several other sewing sites that I've visited, but none that I go to regularly.  Now that I'm not working as much, I'll try to stop in here more frequently.  It's good to see that there are still familiar names here!

Thanks for checking in, Vickie.  Nice to know you're here.

Done any sewing lately?

Hi Joan,

I usually have several projects going at once--something to sew and something to crochet.  In the last couple of months, I've made a top from Slinky knit (Vogue 8597), a pair of pants which actually fits pretty well (Butterick 5222), and I'm getting ready to make a new purse for the summer.  I've also been busy crocheting afghans and making quilts for Project Linus.  A couple of months ago I helped my mother-in-law make a sweatshirt jacket.  She doesn't sew very much, but was really pleased with how it turned out.

How about you--what are you sewing now?

Great sewing (post #32746, reply #60 of 71)

Sounds like you're really busy sewing.  Good for you.  As for me - nuthin' much.  Working on a boat-bag project with my grandson, but that is episodic - whenever he comes to visit.  And some mending.  And I promised myself to make some Bermuda shorts - but haven't started yet - will have to do a muslin and start the fitting from scratch, and waiting to get my sewing room back from houseguests.

I'd love to hear about the purse you're going to make.  I bought some dull-silver soft vinyl I'm hoping to experiment with.

Joan, The purse pattern is (post #32746, reply #61 of 71)

Joan,

The purse pattern is the "Out 'N About Tote" from Ellen Medlock.  The fabrics are coordinating blue/green/white Michael Miller prints--nice summery colors.  I got the pattern at a local quilt shop, but there are lots of neat patterns on her website, www.ellenmedlock.com.

Silver soft vinyl...sounds interesting!

Hey, thanks, I hadn't seen that site before.  Some nice purse hardware, and nice patterns.  Your tote looks like a good one.

Hi, Joan!  I have to agree with Vickie - I've been lurking since the change.  It was such a drastic change & I think a lot of us were left rather speechless (pun intended), as our social community seemed to come to a halt.  There were just too many techy things to deal with at the beginning & they were very confusing.  Things are actually picking up & getting better.  I was surprised how easy it is now to post, compared to what it was at the beginning.  One thing I really miss is that, each time we came to Gatherings & clicked onto a topic, we would come directly/automatically to the latest comments since we last read it, rather than having to scroll all the way to the last place we have read now.  That takes time.   I think that others are also lurking about & may eventually be heard from - I hope!   It's nice to see that so many have already hung in there.  Happy sewing!

Gloria, If you go to the (post #32746, reply #69 of 71)

Gloria,

If you go to the top of the page you can request that you receive the messages in date order.  I put the newest first and saved the setting.  It helps as I get the new messages first now.

glad to see you (post #32746, reply #70 of 71)

It's good to see your name again, Gloria, and good to know you're still checking in here.  I agree, some things have improved about the new system, and in other ways it's still very disappointing.  Unfortunately, Gatherings hasn't recovered from the enormous drop-off in posts, as I'm sure you've seen, and it's been saddening to see the messages from treasured former posters who, frustrated beyond measure, have declared they're logging out permanently.  Ever the optimist, I still hope it will become the lively, very informative and helpful site it once was.

Thank goodness for those who've stayed around - at least it is possible to get answers to sewing questions, if not as quickly.
