Hi, I just joined the Threads forum. I have been reading the magazine for about ten years and I am addicted to it.

My mom taught me how to sew when I was 11 (in the 60’s). Of course I also had sewing in Home Ec and made a pink gingham skirt with a jumper top that buttoned onto the skirt. I made many of my clothes in junior and senior high school.

I now sew for my 9 year old daughter. I am surprised how few moms know how to sew. It is the single best skill I have ever learned.

I am teaching myself how to drape and to make patterns. I made a dressform with the packing tape and it is great (of course my husband had to help me). I had already made the ductape dummy but it stretched out of shape and is falling part.

Anyway these discussions are helpful and fun.

Many thanks for listening

Hi, and welcome. Being a Marylander, have you been to G Street? That is one of my dream shopping venues. I used to go there with my sis when she lived in Herndon VA. Great memories.

I hope to make a duct tape dummy in the near future. Any ideas on how I could prevent a collapse? I planned on filling mine with that exploding fome in a tube from Home Depot. I was concerned how to stop up the leg holes and waist as I am making a pant form.

You sounds like you have some great experience. I love sewing for children too, particularly heirloom sewing. Great to have you aboard.

Thanks for the welcome. I have taken several wonderful classes and have bought gorgeous fabric at G Street Fabrics. I live about 45 minutes away.I would really recommend reading the "Clone Yourself a Fitting Assistant" in the Threads online article under the "Fitting" section. The author talks about 4 ways of making a dressform dummy. The problem with the ducttape is that it eventually stretches and droops. I tried the one using brown paper packing tape with a water activated adhesive on the back. I bought it at Staples and ended up just needing one roll.
It was so strong that I did not need to stuff it.Otherwise you could cut out foamcoare for the bottom of the form. Best of luck and let me know how your dressform turns out. Be sure to have a willing helper as it takes a while to make.

Thanks so much for the info. I have two volunteers to help me. Should be interesting!
