New to the Club!

Hi everyone!

First, excuse my English if it seems strange, it’s because my first language is French.

I just registered after taking a subscription for THREADS where I discover this forum. After buying each issue of THREADS since years, I decided to subscribe after all.
I’m from Province of Quebec, South of Montreal in Canada. I sew since I was introduced to it at school. When I was 20 years old, I took an apartment and one of the first big piece I bougt was a sewing machine! Sewing by periods, going from “each day” to “nothing for months”. I sew from pattern and without a pattern because I love to create from an idea. My husband would tell you that I have enough fabric to open a little store… LOL. I’m in the process to re-re-re-organize my sewing room. I have a 12 years old daughter and with her, I do some projects involving her ideas of creation. She is used to touch fabrics since she was a little little girl and elaborate a concept of something to do with it. It was so cute to see her bringing me a piece of fabric and explain her idea! She’s my sewing partner!

I will be glad to hear from you. If you are located near my place or if you speak French, let me know.

Irene ; )

    Bonjour Irène and welcome!

It would be nice answering to you in French, but not very kind to all those who don't understand it on this forum. Like you, English is a second language for me, but I am Swiss and live again in my home country after a few years in the States. Like you I started sewing in school, and never stopped for more than a few months since then. When I moved in with my boyfriend - now husband - at the age of 22, my sewing machine came along. He hasn't suggested me yet to open my own store but I don't show him my stash more than necessary. In addition to fabrics, I tend to accumulate sewing books. We must be about the same age as my elder son is 10 - the younger is 8 and I'm 38. Both have already used my old Elna but they are probably not so interested in sewing as your daughter is. Sometimes I think having a daughter with which you can share your enthousiasm for sewing must be great. Hopefully I'll have a daughter-in-law or a grand-daughter who will enjoy sewing too.

I hope we'll have the opportunity to "talk" together.

I agree : for the site, English is perfect. My intention was not to post on the site French messages. It's important everyone can understand what is writen into the forum! Irene ;)

        Hello Irène,

I am afraid we have had our first misunderstanding. I never thought you intended to post message in French here. I just wanted to express that I would have loved to answer you in French but refrained me from doing it out of consideration for other members.

Hi Lise-laure and Irene, I am also new to the forum - it will be nice to chat with people who like to sew. I have 2 daughters and neither one likes to sew.  They are grown with children of their own and they come to me and say 'please' - like they did when they were little with their smiles.  So, I say yes to them. I did aske early this year for Halloween costumes; last year I was finishing the sewing just before they went out door to door.  I want to make everything and there is not enough time. I watch my 1 yr old granddaughter during the day and when she goes home I am so tired.  I am glad to meet you both. I am in Connecticut, US ( not too far from Montreal) and Lise - my grandfather was Swiss - I feel at home here.

            Hello Jane!

Welcome to Threads forum. It's a great place to read and chat about sewing. Sometimes I really miss a sewing and fitting buddy. I know nobody of my age who sews around. At least there is this forum.

I make my sons' Halloween costumes too of course. They don't know yet what they want this year... I am glad my husband gives me a hand for the accessories when some are needed (a sword, a breastplate and an helmet for our Roman legionary last year).

I don't know Connecticut. We have lived in Arizona and visited the Southwest of the States only. We went once to Canada, to Vancouver Island last year. What part of Switzerland your grandfather was from?

Hi, How are you? I have been to <!----><!----><!---->Arizona<!----><!---->, a couple of times. We saw the south side of the <!---->Grand Canyon<!---->, it was beautiful.  <!----><!---->Connecticut<!----><!----> is in the Northeast, we have a shore on Long Island Sound. The Sound is between <!---->Connecticut<!----> and Long Island, the water comes in from the <!----><!---->Atlantic<!----> <!---->Sea<!----><!---->.  The current in the sound is not as wild as the ocean, the waves are quieter.  We have a few state parks along the water where everyone can go to enjoy the water.  It is getting a bit colder here now and I am going to miss the warm weather of summer.  <!----><!---->Connecticut<!----><!----> has all four seasons -  we tend to follow some of those poems - April showers bring May flowers. We have snow usually starting around Christmas and then into March. Autumn is usually nice, cool weather, clear skies, and falling leaves.

            Where are you in <!----><!---->Switzerland<!----><!---->?

My grandfather was from Porentry?  -  I believe it is a little town or village. I just went looking for it on the Web and couldn't find a map with it on it.

How old are your boys?  None of my friends sew, so I know what you mean when you say you miss a sewing fitting buddy. Did I say I am making a Dalmatian for my 3 month old granddaughter Cate.
