msewing1 | Posted in Gather For A Chat on

Hey!

I was reading my March 2008 Threads yesterday and the article on Little Black Dresses caught my eye. I’m abt to start on one of my own and I was wondering…Is anyone else? Have a great day!

Yes.  That's why I asked about currently available patterns (message 7977.1).  I got several very good suggestions.

I think this is a project for which I will definitely need to make a muslin!  (A step I often skip...  which may not be wise.)

I really like the understated elegance of the dress on the cover.  Simple, but made with very fine dressmakling techniques.  I don't usually do couture sewing, but would love to try my hand at this.

Oh....I missed that post somehow. Sorry. = )

But yes...I absolutely LOVED (!!!!!) the dress on the cover. It is gorgeous. See....even b4 I got my issue, I had decided to make a little black dress but wasn't sure how I wanted it to look. The article on Little Black Dresses helped a lot! And now I am totally more than READY to start on my "little Black dress" = )

      Tell me how your's goes!!!

That cover dress is very cute.  I've read, tho, that empire waists are out this year, so I'm going to look for something a little different.  I'm definitely going to make a really nice "LBD" tho.

Thanks. I had heard that empire waists were out too. (which i'm kinda sad abt b/c i like empire waists.) = ( But yes...I'm looking for something a little different and I'm going pattern shopping! hooray! = )

I'd like to make this one in black:
http://www.butterick.com/item/B4974.htm?tab=dresses&page=4I made it in a dark blue tropical print and it is much more flattering than you would think.

    1. msewing1 | | #8

That is a really nice pattern! I like the design in the back. Was it hard to do? I made my little black dress this past week and wore to church for easter. I used this pattern: http://www.simplicity.com/dv1_v4.cfm?design=3678 I used the cap sleeve version. It turned out very well. (well...I think so at least! I got a lot of compliments!!!) = ) Happy Sewing!

That is pretty! The Butterick one wasn't hard to do at all. I made some boo boos, but part of that is because it was one of the first lined dresses I'd made. However, it's not really a church dress. ;)

ha ha...yes...that is DEF. not a church dress!!! = D

    2. rodezzy | | #12

Oh that dress is HOT!!!  Send pics of it.....please.  That tropical blue sounds awesome.

      1. FirecrackerKTM | | #15

I'm pretty proud of how it turned out :) Although where the pieces go together in front is a little weird. I remember now, that it gapped open strangely with me in it (I'm not super well endowed, maybe that's it?) So I tried to adjust, with so-so results. But it's wearable. And it's surprisingly flattering considering I am carrying a few extra pounds around the middle.(please pardon the background ... I'm a slob, and I just got back from the gym so I have hat-hair)

        1. rodezzy | | #16

Yes it did turn out good, and you should be proud of it.  I love the fabric too.  Now, you need to knit or crochet a shrug or cropped jacket to match.....te he he.

Darling little dress, you did a nice job on it.  I couldn't tell if it gaps as you mentioned.  I am somewhat "well endowed" for my petite bone structure and still have to adjust for gapping in the chest, neck, and armcyse.  Adjusting for the "upper bust" measurement helps me as I am narrow there.   I really like that fabric, where did you find it?  Mary

          1. FirecrackerKTM | | #18

Thanks all!The fabric (which has glitter outlining the bigger flowers, can't see in pic) came from Joann. It doesn't really gap now ... but the place where the side fronts join with the center front isn't even side to side. The shrug is a great idea. I will have to look for some patterns :) I do have a cropped jacket pattern that is part of another ensemble but I don't know if it will go.

The Denver National Quilt Festival is May  1-4th at the Denver Merchandise Mart.  They have some interesting things to see and do and often very interesting vendors.  They might have some nice fabrics and embellishment items.  Mary

I am really enjoying the posts on this one, and like the patterns that have been shown so far; nice!  You've all got me inspired now, to also make a LBD, so here is my pattern:  http://www.voguepatterns.com/item/V7693.htm

I will use a sand-washed silk, which is one of my favorite fabrics to sew with because: 1) it is easy-care (toss in washer, toss in dryer, toss on to wear); 2) it is comfortable through most seasons and 3) I love sewing on this fabric.

I plan to make View "E", with either the long sleeves, or draft my own "tulip sleeve" pattern (short sleeve).  I find that the tulip sleeve is so very flattering, and is also "all-season".

Oooh, I want to see the dress made out of sand washed silk. Where did you find the material? It sounds lovely.Marcy

      1. Digi | | #14

Hi Marcy:  I don't know where it came from as I bought material on occasion that I "loved" while working long hours (for years), even though I knew I wouldn't be able to sew much until I retired.  However, you might want to try https://www.fabricdepot.com/ as they have just about anything most gals could ever want ...and they are always having great sales.  It is a HUGE fabric store, located in Portland, OR. where I used to live.  And I imagine they still send samples if they find something that fits the description of what you are looking for.  Good luck.

By the way, I love your favorite saying: "Cinderella proves a new pair of shoes can change your life."  I sent it to my daughter-in-law who is a shoe nut ...and actually feels the same way.  LOL!

Good luck, and I'll try to remember to post a photo when I get the dress completed.  I have several things to finish first though, so don't hold your breath quite yet.  I'm making a few things for all the grandchildren, and then will make a couple of less dressy things for church ...have several pieces of beautiful rayon prints (all washable) that I'll make in dresses and then want to make a few things for summer.  I will probably get to the LBD late this spring or summer ...to wear next fall.  My 50th class reunion is this coming September, so I am busy making clothes for that, too.

It seems like there is always too much to do and too little time ...oh ...just too little time.

Thai Silks has a sueded charmeuse.  Sueded and sandwashed are sometimes used interchangeably.  Thai silks does sell sample sets which is great to match colors.  If you want ivory or you like to dye silk, Silk Connection has a sueded habotai that is really nice.  I have a piece I dyed last summer waiting to become a blouse.

I'll bet that blouse is going to feel good on. Sandwashed silk sounds like summertime to me. I didn't know that sueded meant the same. Thanks.
