Fingers and thumbs

katina | Posted in Gather For A Chat on

Cherrypops asks what the 3-6 year olds can make easily. I remember how my daughters and their friends loved to create little items and how proud they were of them. I used felt for these small projects, for the obvious reasons that it doesn’t fray, has good ‘body’ and comes in many colours. Little bags and pincushions were always popular. I would cut the felt into squares of various sizes and the children would cobble them together with running stitches. Then we stuffed them. I’m talking more than 30 years ago and I definitely didn’t have fiberfill then, so we mostly used cotton wool for the pincushions. I still use one my eldest daughter made when she was 4. She stitched a tail on it, secured with a button. The bigger pieces were sewn together on 3 sides to make bags. Kids love putting things into containers. They loved raiding my button jars and many a bag had all kinds of buttons stitched on. These were so bright and naive! I think we lose that folksy touch as we get older and more sophisticated. I also cut the felt into whatever shapes the pieces allowed and some amazing creatures were painstakingly sewn together by little hands. We did have the odd pricked finger, but we jollied the sufferer along. I threaded many a needle and tied a great many knots so they could get started. Fun!
