Can cotton patterns be used for fleece

teagranny | Posted in Gather For A Chat on

I am not great at sewing, children’s projects are best for me.  I have to make a fleece one piece suite for my Granddaughter’s birthday gift in 2 weeks, the kind that you buy for babies but without feet.  Have not been able to find a pattern for a child size 12 yrs.  I do have a one piece suite that I used many years ago to make a denim jump suit – it is for cottons.  Can I use this pattern for a fleece fabric or do some alterations need to be done.

That sounds like a cozy, warm project. I think that the pattern will be fine, but you should allow for the thickness of the fleece when you cut out the pieces. Perhaps cutting a size larger with ample seam allowances for adjustments will give her more ease in the fit.
I'm sure someone else here will let you know if there are other suggestions.

I agree that a pattern for wovens can be used for fleece, if you account for the thickness and use narrower seam allowances. Fleece is made on a knit base, but it doesn't stretch, so patterns for woven fabric can work.

Fleece can be quite bulky, though, so you don't want a lot of piecing or tiny fitted sections in the pattern. You can eliminate facings, and instead of turning up hems, you can a decorative cut (wavy, scallop, zigzag), both of which eliminate bulk.

A lot of great tips for sewing with fleece are online and in sewing magazines.
