After reading Terri Lewis’s question about Saran wrap slopers I decided to give it a try. I’m rather inexperienced with the fine points of fitting so I began by wrapping my D.H’s duct tape double (he has a very pronounced rounded back that tapers to a quite narrow waist). I reinforced all openings with clear tape. I then used a plumb bob to find and mark the center front and back and underarm seams. I placed taped over these seam lines and then cut the “sloper” off the double. Working on the inside I added tape to the openings and seams to reinforce the “sloper”. Naturally, I wanted to flatten the “sloper” so I could make a tissue pattern and sew up a muslin. I opened up darts at the back shoulder seams but it wasn’t enough to make the “sloper” lie flat. I ended up opening two darts in the armscye. One points toward the upper back and the other points toward the lower back. I also slashed the back waist which then closed. So far so good. The “sloper” was now flat. I taped it back together so D.H. could try it on. It fit like a glove. I made a tissue pattern from the “sloper” and while the fronts look fine, to my eye the backs look odd, especially at the armseye which, because of the two darts, is very large and long. So, I have a couple of questions. First, should I have slashed the “sloper” differently? Second, I’ve read Karen Howland’s article about using a sloper as a fitting tool and while I can see how to use the fronts of the “sloper” I’m unsure how to use the backs. Any and all answers or book recommendations will be greatly appreciated.
