lame skirt
Help! I am trying to take in a lame skirt in the side seams. Problem is, the skirt has horizontal pleats fron two inches below the waist to the hem line and I CAN'T GET THEM TO LINE UP! I've tried pin bastibg, then hand basting and machine basting but the fabric still slips. Any tips? I'm desperate.

You might try sandwiching the pieces to be sewn between quality wax paper or tear away stabilizer strips. 1 1/2" to 2" wide should suffice. Each would give you some stability in controlling as it approaches the feed dogs.
Another thought, if you're using a portable on a table, look for a box or like item you can use to have an apron of sorts to the left of the machine. This would be similar to that of a console machine. There are extensions on the market to accomplish this.

The caveat with portables is possible drag as the fabric moves. A goal when joining is to have the all being stitched moving in unison.

Thank you! I have been using my portable because it has the differential feed, but I also have a console but I didn't bother to use it because I have to attach the the walking foot. I will also try the stabilizer. Thank you so much. As a footnote, I hate the new Gatherings format and have read other comments likewise, so I was afraid no one would read my plea for help. You are a dear.

Change is difficult to be sure. Navigating the new platform, & knowing where/what to go/do does indeed have a learning curve. For me it's exercising my 7th decade brain.

I've been thinking about this for a little while. You might try double-sided tape in the seam. Apply the tape to the right side of one seam line. Then line up the pleats and lay the right side of the other seam line onto the tape and finger press the seam. A few pins in the seam allowance as well would be good. You would have to test a small area to see if the tape can be removed easily after it is stitched through. Sew slowly and stop and lift the presser foot every couple of inches to avoid any chance of "creeping".

If you don't have any stabilizer, regular tissue paper (used for packages) will do. Go ahead and put the foot on your other machine because you'll need more working surface to let the fabric lay properly.
