Fitting a young child

I am sewing clothes for a young nephew. He is 6 and a large boy. His measurements are 31 chest, 29 waist 32 tummy and 29 hips. Back to waist is 15 and finished pants need to be 28 from waist to ankle. I am cutting to fit him at the waist and tummy and then need to get up to 8 inches out of the length. Any ideas on a good childs pattern?? I think I need to get a custom designed one for him but don’t know where to look. thanks

I am currently sewing for a size 6 girl and the patterns I am using have a finished side length of 29 inches which is standard for size 6 RTW. Many (most) patterns I use have a "lengthen or shorten here" line on them above/near the crotch and somewhere on the leg. Check for these lines on your pattern. If they aren't present, and you need to add that much length, slash the pattern on the leg in 3 or 4 places and add 2 inches at each slash rather than at the bottom. This would keep the line integrity of the leg better than adding all that length at the hemline. Good luck!

*Robyn, I agree with Susan about the best way to alter the leg. I have a child with similar measurements and my favorites patterns are those with the Kwik Sew Sewing For Children book. Multi-sized, standard style kids clothing with lots of ideas for customizing. The book is about $15 at my Joanns and includes sizes xl through xl for pants, shorts, sweatshirts, t-shirts, pjs, skirts and dresses (if you ever branch out into girls), and jackets. A real bargain, and one I've used for years.

*whoops, I meant sizes XS through XL, not xl through xl. sorry! and when I shorten the pants, I do try to take out the length from the middle of the pant so that the ankle circumference looks right. Good luck!

*I can't say enough good things about the Kwik Sew patterns for kids.My DD could buy nothing that fit her son as a baby and toddler. I sewed everything for him from their books! The patterns are great!
