I am new to this forum and I have become extremely frustrated with sewing clothing due to the frustration of proper fitting, especially for myself.
Right now I have a problem that I really would like to fix which I think I could if I knew how to approach it.
I purchased a sun dress with a fitted waist and bodice. the waist is perfect and the bodice is for someone who is about 2″ taller than me. I took a chance though, because the item is sleeveless with a square neckline and with facing.
When I pull up on the shoulders, the darts and the bottom of the armholes are in the right place but the shoulder seams are up around my ears.
My gut instinct is to create a new shoulder seam, but it looks like I would have to remove all the stitching in that area going back about 3 inches on each side of the seam, pin and mark and then redo the seam.
How do I do it without making a sloppy mess?
Whoever would like to answer this I would appreciate it.

I think you are on the right track.
The most important aspects to fit (for this garment) are your bust darts, armscye and neck. Orient the rest of the garment to these three and do what it takes to make them right.
Yes, it sounds like you will have to do some ripping and re-stitiching. You didn't mention if there were topstitching, if there is, I wouldn't rip the first seam until i took the dress to a store and matched up new thread to old. If your topstitching doesn't match the original exactly, you'll never be happy with the results. That done, proceed exactly as you said.
