Is there a way to alter the side seam of a dress that has an invisible zipper without removing the zipper? My past experience with alterating a slip dress resulted in taking the whole dress apart so I could put the invisible zipper in with the side pieces flat. Any advice will be appreciated – I’ve started to run into this situation altering readymade bridesmaids’ dresses and prom gowns.

Melissa, I do this all the time. There is no need to undo the entire dress to put zipper back in flat. I take the zipper out from the bottom up, unless only the top area needs removing to alter. For the whole seam length, remove the zipper, press zipper out like package directions suggest, thread mark where adjusted seam will lie, hold zip in place along that line to see if the closure needs shortening - it normally does. I close the opening up to a point 1/4" above the top of slide when it is in its lowest or open fully position. Resew in zipper on one side, thread make opposits side of closed zipper where any seam crosses and the point where you stopped stitching zipper back in on 1st side. Open zip, and sew 2nd side matching thread marks on zip to seams if any and the bottom mark to top of seam opening. Hope this is clear. Bill
*Thanks, Bill! I'll give this a try next time!
