adding dart to t-shirt pattern

fabricholic | Posted in Fitting on

I have a question. I was told once how to add a dart to a pattern, say for a t-shirt, that didn’t have one. They said you put in the dart, and at the bottom, where the hem is, add a triangle as wide as the dart and end it in the middle, as long as the dart is long. Will this work?

I don't think so. Go get yourself a fiting book, Fit for Real People is probably the best, and use their instructions. I could explain it here, but pictures are much easier.

why do you want to add the dart? just to fit the pattern a bit? is it for a large bust?

If its just to fit the pattern to you a little better, then make the muslin, pin the dart where you want it and even out the hem line, sort of like you described - Only if this gives the look and fit you want. If its for a full bust, then you will have to add length and width to the front like any full bust adjustment. If its a knit fabric that you want to stretch and fit snug then you don't have to add as much room.

Although I'm full busted, I don't add darts to tshirts. Instead, I re-draw the side seams to be a more curvy hourglass shape. This allows enough for enough fabric over the bust, but less across my ribcage. On each side, the curve goes in almost a full inch right at the waist, so that's 4 " less fabric right where I'm smallest.

          That's very interesting.Marcy
