Looking for washable velvet

cottonbets | Posted in Fabric and Trim on

Two years ago, I purchased some washable velvet; I think that fiber content was listed as microfiber. I’ll be using it to back a quilt which will be quilted, (probably by machine), so I’m looking for something more drapey than velveteen. I know that this sounds like a crazy fabric  choice, but I made one for my son, and  it felt as lovely as the old family quilt he loved. Now it’s time for my daughter’s quilt, just after I finally finished up the BOLT of deep green stuff. I’m hoping to get this done before she goes off to college, so would appreciate any leads on sources. Thanks!

Yes , the micro velvet washes like a charm. It also has a stretch to it just like the micro slinky fibre, and it is GREAT STUFF!

Hey, I am seconding that opinion. it is fantastic stuff and makes great little shirts that are so simple to sew, lovely to wear and really dress up a nice skirt or pair of trousers.

a simple sheath made from it is elegant and comfy and it would certainly work well for quilting.

        Besty,

I'm trying to bring this topic back up to the top of the list today. Are you trying to find woven velvet or stretch knit? Seems that these members have found the knit kind  (I've seen poly/lycra stretch velvet quite  lot), but so far no luck with the woven kind. Hmmm....I'll be sure to let you know if I do see it anywhere.

Carol, good point! I noticed that one message referred to stretch. YIKES, NO! This is for quilt backing; I need woven, for sure. After spending many hours on the internet and phone, looking for the stuff, I found washable velvet at our local chain store. Unfortunately, the colors were pretty limited, so I'm still looking. If the color is that important to my daughter, I may go with one of the vibrant flannels now available; it would go well with the hand dyes used on the front of the quilt. It seems hard to imagine sleeping under something this warm, especially while working on 90 degree days, but that is what she wants. Maybe we have overemphasized how cold it will be in Geneva New York, who knows?   Thanks for any help you can give.

Is it possible to overemphasize the winter weather in upstate NY?! I don't think so. Well, a velvet quilt back would be luxurious, for sure, but there are some pretty spectacular, very cozy flannels for quilt backs available now. You could even embellish it--try the D"UVA fabric paints and crayons (http://www.duva.com), which are removable till heat set. She might enjoy doing the embellishment herself, even. A quilt back is a pretty sizable canvas--you two could have some fun.

The velvet idea dates back to a quilt my (now) husband gave me when I was going off to college. I was surprised that my parents let me keep such a "personal gift"; I think my mom must have liked the deep blue velvet, and may have considered the fact that she could cross one more thing off of the get-for-college list. I went even further north in NY than Meg is going, though Canton didn't have the wind that Geneva seems to get. Anyway, both of our kids have always loved the old velvet quilt, AND they have remembered that I once said I'd make them velvet quilts when they went to college. Gulp, got me there. I'm off to pick up a flannel piece that a friend brought back from a store she passed for me. I think I'll pass on decorating the back of the quilt, thanks. When Meg saw the, um, wild front laid out, she worried that it might overwhelm a small dorm room, not to mention a new room mate! The back is going to be the cool, calm, plain alternative. I'll try to get a photo for the Threads on-line "album" if I can. I'd still like to do the velvet back, if possible, because of the history. Perhaps I'll finish this one with flannel, and then work on a velvet if that ever turns up somewhere. Thanks for the help!  Betsy
