Looking for altar linen fabric

Libby86's picture

Hello,

I am new to posting, but not to reading, gatherings and have been reading Threads for some years.

Currently I have been asked to assist an altar guild to make new altar linens for a new church.  The sewing part should be pretty easy--but I am having trouble finding fabric.

The altar is 4 feet deep so the fabric need to be wider than that, at least 60 inches wide, in a linen type fabric with a nice drape and easy to maintain.

I would appreciate any suggestions for resources.

Thanks

Libby

Hi Libby - you might want to post your query in the 'Sacred Threads' thread as well.  It's a relatively new section 'devoted' to religious garments and vestments.  Frances

If you want real linen, Pam at ThreadPro has the nicest I've ever

felt. Should last for a century or two with reasonable handling.

Kay beat me to it! I'd recommend looking at Pam Burke's linen at ThreadPro, too. She buys it directly from mills in Belgium, and since she's a former art conservator as well as an expert at embroidery, she is extremely particular about the quality and longevity of the fabric she uses and sells. She's also an expert at embroidery church linens, so you might want to contact her about designs, techniques, etc. She'll be teaching monogram embroidery at the expo in Puyallup, but if you can't make it there, take a look at her article in Threads, No. 101.

Dear Kay

Thanks for showing me the Threadpro site.  Beautiful stuff!

Hello All,
Hubby has said that he wants me to make real linen shower curtains for the new master bath - I remembered this thread from 2004, and went looking for it to find the link to wide linen - and tried to go to the threadpro site, but I am not finding it. Have they gone out of business? Are they doing business under a new name? Any suggestions as to where I could get 70" + wide linen for making shower curtains? The curtain rod will be a L-shape, with one leg 72" and one leg 36". Help?

The site you mentioned is apparently out of business. Some other folks on this forum discussed this a year or so ago. Extra wide linen can be very expensive, especially the quality used for bedding, but you may not need/want that fine quality for a shower curtain.

Mary Jo's Cloth Store will try to track down fabric for you. If you go to their site, you can click on "Ask Mary Jo" and describe what you're looking for, and they'll get back to you - they promise to order from the manufacturer if there's something they don't have in stock. There's also a "Contact Us" button, where you email your question. You can also get their phone number from the site, and call them directly. They're very helpful there. Good luck in your search.

This is the web address for Mary Jo's:

Another site you might consider being in touch with the next.   Though linen is missing from the left menu, being in touch with the company might get you results.  There's a Contact Us hyper link in the ypper left hand corner of the banner.  It can be easily missed.

I just did that ~ wrote to Homespun to ask if they knew of any sources for wide linen.

Also, fabrics.net has a "Request Fabrics" page: http://www.fabrics.net/swatch/Default.asp that may be useful for you. Happy hunting - let us know what you find!

Bright Blessings!

I got a very nice replay from DeAnna in Sales at Homespun Fabrics.

Libby, I'd seen your inquiry and then lost it. I posted a couple of sources for you in the Sacred Threads area. You might want to scan back through the Braided Embellishment discussions. Several of us wandered into liturgical needlework themes, so Carol Fresia created a more accurate new heading so that interested newcomers could join in. Welcome!
