Home Decor Fabric vs. Clothing Fabricc
I recently began to do clothing sewing after doing only home decor for many, many years. I have rolls and rolls of decorator fabric. Not all, but some of it looks like it could be used for clothing, like vests & jackets, maybe totes. I know that the width is different and that it has beent treated for stain removal. Other than that, what is the difference? Would you use it for clothing?

Personally, I don't make a distinction. It makes no difference to me what department it comes from. Many upholstery fabrics are more supple and workable for clothing after being washed, so wash a few swatches and see what happens. Some will not hold up well, but I've found that the majority do just fine. Lucky you, to have lots of fabric to play with!

Great! Now I've just added a lot more fabric to get creative with. I know that not all of it would work on clothes but some will. Thanks for the reply......off to decide which one to use first. I don't want to use anything that I have used in my own home. I'd hate to match the window treatments!

I once used a boucle curtain fabric for a smashing dress, went to a party and found myself sitting next to the hostess' living room curtains! Big laugh, all 'round.

LOL! "Match the curtains" TeeHeeHee! I never even *thought* of that possibility!
I totally agree with Starzoe and Ralphetta! And Yeah, it will generally loosen up with washing, maybe change other consistancy parameters, too (Oooh - do I get the "Big Word Award" for the week??) so try out a swatch first, unless you're feeling adventurous.

A couple of years ago I found a remnant of upholstery fabric that I loved--beautiful jewel tones of navy, ruby, green, and gold. Made a jacket from it and I like how it turned out. But sometimes I wonder if people think I'm wearing the living room chair! [it's probably because I know it's from the home dec section of the fabric store...] I also made a tote bag that matches the guest room duvet cover--but I don't think any of our guests will ever notice!
Lucky you to have a good supply of fabrics to play with. I'm sure a couple of those pieces will 'speak' to you, and you'll sew something fabulous!
