In a few months I will be traveling to Hong Kong & China. Does anyone know where I can get good buys on fabric? Thanks

Norma - You might want to get ahold of the "Born to Shop Hong Kong" paperback by Suzy Gershman. You can get it on amazon.com-I think you'd find it very helpful. Leslie B.

*Visit Angus International, 19/f, 8 Soares Ave.Kowloon City, H.K. Its been over 10 years but on several occassions merchants tried to sell me "fake" silk. I have a dressing gown of 100% polyester in rememberance of a very charming and convincing merchant who recognized my inability to say "I don't beleive you."

*In Beijing, I found the regular chinese department stores had lots of beautiful woolens and tailors right there to make anything you wanted too. There was silk too but too traditional for me. These were not the friendship stores for tourists.

*In Beijing, a big choice of real silks can be found in Dazhalan Street (south-west of Tiananmen Square, roughly parallel to Qianmen Xidajie Street, perpendicular to Qianmen Dajie Street). The older department stores (not Friendship stores) are good to. In Shanghai, there is a wonderful shop with beautiful linen and silks called Shanghai Silk Commercial Building co., 139 Tianping Road, Shanghai 200030. Hillary Clinton and Ms. Blair bought there. After spending some time there, I found beautiful fabrics (although, there are a lot of rather dul

*I saw lots of very nice high quality silks in the China Products department stores. There are several branches of this store in Hong Kong, but the one I liked best is right near the Star Ferry Terminal in Kowloon. The fabric was mostly quite dressy, but the prices seemed fair-perhaps slightly lower than the equivalent in the US. There's another cluster of good quality fabric shops on the upper floor of Western Market, a renovated Victorian shopping arcade near Kennedy Town. They had nice cottons and linens in addition to silk. For lower prices, there are lots of small vendors at the street markets. However, be sure you are very knowledgeable before you buy anything there. Some shops may negotiate prices, (although department stores don't.) Always negotiate with street vendors - it can't hurt.I have the impression that Hong Kong people are too busy to sew for recreation-lots of them already sew for a living. Most of the fabric I saw was more for special occasions than for every day clothing.Hong Kong is wonderful! Have fun!

*Just want to thank everyone for all the suggestions. I will take the names of all the shops with me. You were all very helpful.
