Fabric in Phila?

Sewmama_ | Posted in Fabric and Trim on

Help….I’m going to visit Philadelphia soon, and I want to go fabric shopping at someplace other than Jo-Anns. If you live in the area, where do you shop? I used to live in the suburbs, twenty years ago, but all my favorite stores are closed! (No more little Italian guys telling you to “feel the goods”, and boy do I miss them!)

I have family in Philly & lived there about 2 years ago...

Do you remember 'Fabric Row'? It's still alive and kicking, a few blocks south of South Street. I would definitely go there. I bought some beautiful wool there a few years ago.

*Hope I'm not too late Sewmama. I spent most of my life in Philadelphia, but I now live in North Jersey. There are still a number of nice fabric shops in Philadelphia. The bulk of them are in the South Street area. Specifically, they are on or around 4th Street, south of South Street, near Bainbridge Street. I like Kincus at 755 South 4th St. (215-923-8836); they are open late on Wednesday evenings. However, there are a number of others, such as Zoll's, Maxie's Daughter, etc. Some are elgant and expensive; some are modest and inexpensive. Some specialize in bridal, decorating, notions, or tailoring, but there are a goodly number from which to choose and they have extensive stock. In Center Center (downtown Phila.), Karlin's is at 34 North 8th St., between Market and Arch streets (215-922-0476). Also, Stapler's is at 1224 Walnut Street, between 12th and Juniper streets, I think, (215-545-4777).If you will be in the northwest section of the city, there is the Fabric Factory Outlet at 1636 Wadsworth Avenue, between Michener and Cheltenham avenues (215-247-1155). In Chestnut Hill there is Byrne's at 8434 Germantown Avenue, near Bethlehem Pike (215-247-3485). Finally, you can also search for fabric stores online by city. Hope this helps.
