Boston fabric stores

mae | Posted in Fabric and Trim on

Hello everybody…I’m new to gatherings and have a question. I go to Boston frequently and wanted to know of a great fabric store (clothing mostly). Also, is there a fabric district? If so where?

Thanks! Mae

Alas, Mae, in Boston proper there are very few fabric stores. Most in the downtown area closed several years ago. Winmil is the only one I know of left. It is in Chinatown. There are a couple in Cambridge: Sew Low and SewFisticated Fabrics.

If you are willing to venture farther afield there are several within an hour's drive: Fabric Place in Framingham, Sawyer Brook in Clinton (call to make sure of their hours), Apple Annie's in Seekonk on the south shore, Bedford Fabrics in Fall River (not too far from Apple Annie's), and if you head north, Fabric Fix in Manchester, NH and Martin's House of Cloth, right down the street from Fabric Fix in Bedford, NH.

    Good luck and happy hunting!

Fabric Fix is one of my favorite places in the world. I make sure to stop there every time I visit my grandchildren in the Manchester area. New Hampshire is tax free, in case you did not know. Martins, up the street, has the best home dec around and you need a while to see everything. Good luck.

The Malden Mills Retail store for Polar Fleece is in nearby Lawrence.

There is also a Fabric Place in Randolph, which is 15 min. south of boston. They have a website (fabricplace.com, I think).

I just returned from Boston searching for fabric stores.   The list I got off the internet is very, very old.   Winmil did have some interesting stuff.   Down the street closer to the crossing is Clement Textile which was a total bust!   DiCarlo use to be wonderful but is now web based only.  I did find SewFisticated in the Lechmere area on Somerville/Cambridge border and had some luck with a plaid silk.  They have a lot and the store is larger than it appears from the front.   Fabric Fix is well worth the trip.   Osgoods in West Springfield is wonderful.   I hear there are some good non-quilt oriented places in Rhode Island???
